I wonder, would a combination of the mint/oregano tea, and DE in a garden sprayer work for detering ants and aphids? I wonder if the DE would suspend well enough and not clog up the sprayer?
If the mint and oregano kills ants (which I doubt) try adding a few leaves to the pile by the nest and see if they are taken below or discarded.
BTW Wikipedia says that desired plants can be defended, Deterring the leafcutter ant Acromyrmex lobicornis from defoliating crops has been found simpler than first expected. Collecting the refuse from the nest and placing it over seedlings or around crops resulted in a deterrent effect over a period of 30 days.[13] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaf-cutter_ants

Mean while cpntinue to water those mini roses since most are grown on their own root (Not grafted like big roses) often they will regrow from the roots, The deer used to love mine and would eat them to the ground unless fenced. Deer liked them so much that they would climb onto my porch to eat potted plants that I had left to harden off before planting in the ground! Good luck!
