You need to re-read this whole thread, there is a little more to it :)

Uh oh...the liq on top is brownish.

I think I may be in trouble!!
The liquid that seperates from healthy starter takes on a sort of undescribable grey(?) cast... it reminds me of dirty laundry water I guess. I take mine out of the fridge, give it a stir with a wooden spoon and let it warm to room temp before I feed it... as it warms, bubbles forming on top are a good sign:ya. If I remove a cup of starter, I replace it with a cup of flour and a cup of water and I don't worry about stirring it completely. I don't feed my starter before I use it, but like I said, I replace whatever I take out.
When I first started making sourdough it seemed a bit "involved" and intimidating:hide but I read several recipes, chose one that someone didn't complicate the heck out of, after all, it's not a souffle' (not that I've ever made a souffle' but it doesn't sound like it's easy:idunno).

Thanks Vail....I pulled it out of the fridge. I think part of my problem is that I have been feeding it everyday, but keeping it in the fridge.

maybe it needs more reg room temp time.

I think I may try to start mine again, there has to be some kinda trick to it or something though. Mine dies every time. It will start then fizzle out.

Hmmmmm.....How are you making your starter and what do you do once it's started?
