At the end of the month, I'll be taking a 10 hour bus trip with DH and his high school band to NYC. I don't want to rely on fast food and vending machines while I'm there (for breakfast and in between meals). Though our hotel will have fridges/microwaves, we'll be gone from the hotel from 7am-9pm each day. It's a challenge to eat while I'm traveling since I'm allergic to dairy so I tend to take a lot of food with me. It's hard to find a restaurant that knows if they have dairy-free options. I am making a list of foods (mainly breakfasts and snacks) for me to pack for the road trip and then to pack in my backpack to have with me during the day while walking around NYC.

Here are the qualifications....
-no dairy (I'm allergic)
-minimal sweets since I'm trying to keep my sugar-craving self in-check
-easy to pack and easy to eat while on a bus or while walking around town

Here are my ideas so far and I'd love if you could add to them :)

- homemade granola bars
- dried fruit and nuts in baggies
- apples?
- carrot sticks
- peanut butter sandwiches (maybe for just the first day or two since they'll get stale)

Thanks in advance! :D

Homemade jerky
Hummus and the veggies for dipping ( I buy these prepacked organic at Costco)
what about homemade tuna kits
over-sized coconut flakes
oatmeal packets homemade or bought

I make Gluten free homemade MRE's in our to go bags for our allergic child, you could vacuum seal your daily meals together like the meals ready to eat.

I will have to think of some more...

*eta I love the vacuum fried banana chips from trader joe's.
Miso soup packets, I buy them at Costco they are super handy, they come in two parts, heat a cup of water and add the seasoning and veggie packet.
I also bring along organic soup packets when I need to warm my insides.

still thinking...

Don't make your sandwiches up in advance. Pack a loaf or two of bread, a small jar of pb and a small jar of jam. Then you can just make up pbjs each morning, or they'll be available for a late night snack. Hardboiled eggs could be packed in a cooler for the trip and kept in the fridge while you're there. That could also go for any sandwich fixins--lunch meat and mayo, etc.

sufficientforme we have been dabbling with it for about a year now, well, actually probably a bit longer. We haven't gone completely 'over there' but we try very hard to stick with it. (Tonight's dinner oven roasted pork shoulder (too windy to smoke it! Boo!) and veggies, probably steamed with some butter on them).
We have discovered a number of things doing so.
I (we) don't really need the carbs
I still like GOOD bread
Sugar is bad!
I get little tiny sort of pimples on my face when I eat too much sugar now (worse for refined sugar)
I am allergic to pasteurized milk and dairy products (cheese too)
Raw is fine :)
It is STILL hard to resist temptation when someone brings a "treat" into the office. I knew it wasn't good for me before, but now I know *why* and that doesn't make it any easier to resist!

We run a very tough schedule, he works 50 hours a week with a 3 hr a day commute. I don't enjoy cooking (even though I know WHY to cook now...), and so we have a hard time. Add to that feeding horses in the evenings once a week plus other miscellany, and it gets tough to stick with it!

But I see commercials for junk foods now and look at them with distaste. We have come a long, LONG way from where we were!

Anyway, back to the topic :)
