I do the same thing with 1 gallon water jugs using them in spring and fall. I have had great results under tarps. I use as many as I can get my hands on and like the screw top type. I have popped the tops off more than a few of the push on ones when I'm in a hurry and the temps are plummeting.

If you can watch for big church or school functions where they have sports parties or children's parties. I used to volunteer at the high school near me and I picked up 24 of the big one gallon Hawaiian punch jugs. I washed them out and fill with water for my back up for the chickens and us. they are sturdier than the milk jugs and with that little handle they are easy to carry around. I change the water out once a year if we don't use it. they seem to stay very clean for a long time for me or at least they are easier to spot when they get too icky to use.
Some of the other moms asked why on earth I would need so many and I explained about the power going out all the time and it is for my animals they all thought that was the best idea. so many of the big jugs went home with other moms. I also told them that you can cut the bottom out and make mini greenhouses for your plants. I like to reuse stuff. I have used them to baby my fruit trees when they were young. poked one or two small holes in the bottom of three of them and buried them about half way into the ground and filled them up.

Cloches are okay.. if you only have a few to cover but if you put in whole rows it is easier to use reemay(row cover/frost cover or frost cloth there are a few different names for it.
Definitely agree more..:D
