Hey, crealbilly, I'm a native born WV gal. Parkersburg, up near where Beekissed lives. Many yrs of back & forth to see grands got me highly excited with the coal ponies. Yep, waaaaay back then there were a lot of them! As an adult I was able to have my own little herd. By that time they were "miniature horses" and way more expensive 
Only lived there as a young child. Dad in Navy and Norfolk is almost a given for ships. Still in the area some 65 yrs after arriving as a youngster.
