How old is your guide dog puppy? My niece trained a couple, what a worthwhile endeavor. She really got a lot out of that herself. It was a great experience for the whole family.
My current puppy, Moxie, is 10 months. He is our second to raise. It's a LOT of work, but worth it. We also have a dog training for hospital therapy and a pet dog.

We looked into raising Labs for guide dogs back when I had a few- the kids wanted to have more puppies and if we were going to do that I needed to have a way of NOT KEEPING more dogs. Unfortunately we were told that the field bred lines weren't acceptable for guide dogs. :( We did sell a puppy to a search and rescue organization, though.

*planting goats* snicker. A lot of that mis-reading going around lately!

Field dogs ARE NOT good guide dogs! LOL. I know because my last puppy was perfect for field work and hunting, search and rescue or drug sniffing but horrible at the quiet work. This current dog is doing okay, but with a 60% failure rate it's hard to know who will pass and who will not. It's a fun process but a lot of work. I'd recommend it to anyone who would like to give it a try.
