welcome to SS from mid-Michigan. :)

whatever clean organic materials you can find will help, but it may also be good to include a small percentage of clay to help hold nutrients and moisture if your soil is primarily sand.

for your primary gardens you don't want them too far from the house as then it becomes easier to ignore them plus the wild animals will find it much easier to raid.
