Thanks for all the welcomes - I already feel at home! :D

Kristin,
no, unfortunately, I live all the way down in Stamford. I would love to live more up your way; honestly, I'd love to just get outside Fairfield county, there's way too much attitude here for me. Even though I've lived here for a very long time (25 years), I was born and raised in Ohio and have just never really gotten used to the difference. Plus, I'd really love to have a little more land. We've only got just over an acre. Though I do squeeze a lot out of it!

DrakeMaiden,
I did just start the bees this spring, just maybe a month or so ago. My daughter lives in Boston and got involved with some treatment-free beekeepers (as a matter of fact they wrote the book, "The Complete Idiots Guide to Beekeeping), she started volunteering with them and has started a couple of hives of her own. It's a real learning experience. I'll keep you posted!

Yeah, we're just about as far apart as you can get in this state! I know what you mean about attitude. There is much less out here. East of the river is not even considered to really be part of the state by some! We've only got three quarters of an acre and hope for more someday.

I believe I have heard that that is a great beginner beekeeping book. That is wonderful! I was hoping to keep bees as organically as possible. I wish you success with your hives this year!

I have a Boston Terror! Yes, Terror!
Looks like we really have things to talk about! I grew up with BTs and always have at least one - they're crazy, but so addictive. People are always scared to death of my big bad american bulldog (who would never hurt them), and want to play with the "little puppy" (who would go after them on a whim). When my 3 year old granddaughter is visiting, it's the BT I keep a constant eye on.

BTW, what town are you in? I grew up in Lorain.

We have a english/pit cross that is the best LGD dog ever. When my dad was very sick I had to take care of him 24-7. We couldn't bring all our animals off 10 acres to 1, so I had to go once a day and tend everything and leave food out for her and while she was running the place baby chicks hatched and baby goats were born! Not a single animal was harmed by wild animals or anything else. The day we picked her up to move in with my dad, we also picked up all the animals other than a couple of chickens a muscovies I couldn't catch. When we went back the next day the poor chickens and muscovies with no protection were killed overnight. All we found were piles of feathers. That told me immediately she had been doing a good job! She looks like a really well built pit and is dark brindle. Everyone hestitates about geting out of their vehicle when they see her loose until they get to know her. One guy said that he wasn't going to get out then he saw her wiggling at his door and knew then she wasn't mean!
