No, but like pat said, they would have eaten some as part of normal browsing but it would have been seasonally and in small qty.

Yes, I remember the cow with the port hole and the grains do cause all kinds of health issues for the cows.

Yeah, I saw that coming.

I was not saying the two were related. What I was simply doing is thinking out loud.

I was noting the coincidental effect that the over use of grain could be causing health issues in both animals.

I don't recall seeing any evidence-based suggestions that graining cattle has anything to do with mad cow disease?

OTOH a grain-heavy diet in cattle IS implicated in the overgrowth of pathogenic E coli strains and other "food poisoning type" bacteria, resulting in both a) more antibiotic use in the cattle which promotes development of resistant strains of the pathogens that can then be a problem in people too, and b) more contamination of meat and milk with those pathogenic bacteria.
