I am one of the uninsured. Who in the hell appointed themselves a spokes person on my behalf!?!?

STOP HELPING ME! You are JUST MAKING IT WORSE.

From a business perspective, we are doing the math right now to see if I will have to be fired from the family business if health care passes. It comes down to how much the fine is vs how much the coverage costs. The business certainly WILL NOT be hiring anyone though we will need help around the holidays.

Premium and out-of-pocket expenses for medical care going up at least 46 and as much as 68%. If your individual insurance plan costs you $411 per month now, imagine it at $700.

We hear a lot of whining about Medicare rates, and not enough about uncompensated care for hospitals which the American Hospital Association pegged as $43 billion in 2008. This picture gets substantially worse. The early estimates for 2009 are already $62 billion. Urban Institute predicts a range of $107 to $141 billion by 2019. Yes, thats per year. And yes, that means many hospitals will go under.

Why? Were due for a dramatic increase of the uninsured. 53 million is the best case scenario. 68 million is the worst.

no coverage in remote areas. 3,000 people line up for 2 1/2 days to get free care from physicians, dentists, etc.

does this have to happen?????? and this was a REMOTE area. You could not OFFER this free service in a real populated area now could we?

I would be more than happy to set up a service where those who are really concerned about other people's health care can "adopt" a person or a family without insurance. Since it will be peer to peer, there will be no need for additional taxes. It will also eliminate the government waste that is associated with every single other program they ever ran in the entire history of the country.

The software even exists now to put something like this together.

So who wants to put their money where their mouth is?

Blue Skys said "There are ways to get healthcare without insurance, and again there are the exceptions that rack up thousands of dollars on bills, but the majority of people won't have to go bancrupt for the sake of regular healthcare, they may just have to learn to spend less on other things - vehicles, houses, etc... as someone had stated earlier."

As I mentioned in my former post, DH and I have insurance; we are retired, but not yet eligible for MediCare, and so we bought insurance, because to be without it is unthinkable. Because we do not have the backing of our employers (no employers but ourselves) or any other group over which to spread the cost we pay approx 1/5 of our yearly income on medical premiums, and this goes up by 15 to 20% every year. Our deductable is another $5000+ a year. We pay it because we have no choice, and, as I said, not having insurance is unthinkable. And, I should note, this is the cheapest coverage we've been able to obtain. 2 years ago we were very glad for it as my DH was diagnosed and treated for 3 (three) different cancers in the course of ten months! May I respectfully note, Blue Skys, that cutting back in our already relatively frugal lifestyle would not have covered the bills for this? More than $100,000 is a lot of of fat to pare from any household budget, much less one than isn't that great to begin with. And, if I may, I will also point out that we are not an isolated case. Cancer is more and more common, and getting more and more expensive. We are able to cover the costs at the moment, though it is harder ever year. Many are not. It is unconscionable that the United States is the only 1st world country that does not ensure basic healthcare for all it's citizens.

The problem for you ORchick is that current laws prevent you from pooling with others in the same position and across state lines. GOVERNMENT is causing the problem with your increasing medical costs. The odds of government fixing the problem they caused with more money and power is slim to none.

I asked that of Blue Sky before?
She said auto ins. is state governed, so I threw out maybe the individual states should pony up for their state's uninsured?

Those like TX with huge uninsured numbers would be border jumping in a heartbeat. People who had money would be moving to a state with less insureds. A good way to run from the problem like we are doing right now.

What you throw out is not possible. It isn't even a question worth answering. United we stand, divided we fall.

You have heard of insurance risk management haven't you? You realize that tons of factors are included in their premiums on regions, no. of hospitals in the area, no. of uninsureds in the area, no. of risky jobs that are chemical related and/or hazardous. etc. And MORE. (of course I would have to look up the full details--but I know you understand)

Location of insureds is very forefront about the price of some coverages.

An insurance company in Tennessee will NOT give TN prices to an Atlanta Georgia resident. The prices will be padded etc. due to risk management which is super intricate of course.

Don't assume over the state line is so simple. It sure isn't.

And while SOME might save $50-75 per month, what about those pesky millions uninsured again?
