The price was the best part, it was pork fat, and it was free! It was from the Publix meat dept.

As it gets close to being all done, it gets really crackly and poppy, just like bacon. You'd think this would've been obvious, but there I was, peering into the pot >_<
No injuries, just scared me to death.

I forgot to mention earlier that I also made a big bucket of homemade laundry soap today. I scented it with a quarter ounce of bergamot oil.
J spent a few minutes wiggling the bucket and poking at it when he got home, apparently the texture is amusing :p

OM NOM NOM...
Oops, sorry, I was too busy stuffing my face. Yesterday I saw cheap pork shoulder at the store, so of course I bought it. Here's my favorite thing to do with pork:
Stick it in the crock pot with some Dale's and some Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce. The next morning, pull that sucker out, shred it, and add some more barbecue sauce.
Then I recreate one of my favorite things: Pig in the Garden from Jim n' Nick's!
Big platter of salad greens (I like spring mix, but certain family members won't eat "the weeds", so they get romaine), add tomato, cuke, onions, shredded cheddar, and banana peppers. On top of this put a pile of pulled pork. Drizzle with ranch.
Eat.
Swoon.

Fridays are special food day around here!
J and I are splitting a porterhouse, with salad and green beans for me and salad and potatoes for him. I also made some shallot gravy. OH MY GOODNESS! I'm new to shallots, but I understand why they're so expensive!

I started seeds too. I've started big slicing tomatoes, little cherry tomatoes, tons of herbs, and some chamomile. All of this will have to go into pots. Anyone have any advice about doing tomatoes in pots? Will five gallon buckets with holes punched in the bottom be ok?

Cap'n Nasty is in the stock pot! I caught him beating the tar out of Godzilla (my giant angel rooster), and I hit my limit.
Cap'n Nasty was a little OEGB roo that was given to me last spring, and I took him because he was pretty and fun, and I wasn't being practical. Now that I'd like to raise some chicks, I don't want inedible stringy bantam genes in my lines. Not to mention his *charming* temperment.
Anyway, HOLY COW that was a tough bird. SO did the killin', and after neck-snapping, he actually had a hard time cutting the neck to bleed out the bird. I skinned the bird, and it was HARD to do. Like, it took significantly more force than castrating calves, and that's not easy pullin'! I see why these little guys are used for fighting, it'd be nearly impossible for them to sustain an injury. Tough birdy.
