bbh: i do plan on breeding. that's why i'm aiming for quality starting out. it'll make my job easier! i've been looking at Marans but i want the "odd" colors like blue, blue birchin, and wheaten. for some reason (probably because i like to make things complicated for myself) i always like the ones that are hardest to find!

blackbird: i'm way to picky for assortments. i've thought about it time and time again, but i just can't seem to do it. i almost ordered a turkey assortment and then spent 3 hours pouring over breed info and decided i couldn't let someone else pick for me. yes, i'm livestock neurotic...

wifezilla: as for ducks, this go round i'm pretty sure that i'm getting blue Cayugas, Golden Cascades, and either crested Buffs or White Crested. next year, hopefully, i'll expand to Silver Appleyards, Saxonies, and Anconas.

chickenwise, i'm adding Salmon Faverolles, buff Chanteclers, blue-laced red Wyandottes, blue Orpingtons, Delawares, and Andalusians.

and turkeys are going to be Calicos, blue Palms, and chocolate Slates.

I'M SO EXCITED!

Hi bbh & bib. birds !

Have you tried Dorkings! Three years ago I bought in some eggs to put under my broody white Plymouth hen because even over here they are expensive. I now am breeding my own. They are great producers of eggs (6 per week), they start producing young. They make great devoted mothers although the advice is not to let them sit in their fist year. Mine did & were totally dedicated to the task. I now have too many chaps so will process them. I know they will make great eating as I remember them from my youth. In Victorian times they were the favoured table bird as they have long backs with plump breasts plus the meat is very white. Mine are Silver Dorkings & they are so beautiful to have around. Oh! & they are very friendly & well behaved. They free range my garden & I love 'em.....!! They are an ideal dual purpose bird.

Hi Hattie!! :frow

I'm going to do some research on Dorkings right now! (I love the name, to begin with, I'm a dork too!)

Bibliobirds, I love unique chickens too. AND I want them all to look different from eachother...I have to be able to tell them apart. :p

Boy, and here I am trying to convince my partner we need "just" 6 more hens because our 6 we have are getting elderly. ;)

Valmom are you going to cull the elderly birds to eat or just let them live out their natural lives?

I cull mine about every 2 years or so and replace them. This is the year for mine to be replaced. They are almost 3!!
