holy heat batman!

so far today i've sweated thru 2 shirts and now the heat index is 101* and i just came in with some beans so snap for supper. actually i probably could have stayed out longer but all these panting dogs were making me hot.

here's a weird one for you. so you know that surprise chick that showed up yesterday? well - sadly - this morning i went in to find a dead chick in the middle of the hen house. (a sad start to any day) but i couldnt figure out how he got there. and worse - he was still warm so if i would have gotten out there earlier i may have been able to save him.

fortunately the surprise chick was still there - whew!

so

what we think happened is that Miss Duck, whos been sitting for a while, either hatched him or she snatched him out of janes nest.....and didnt want him so she thew him out of her/jane's nest. either way we cant have that.

so.... we took up Miss Duck and put her in with the runners in their Triple Max Slam (no one gets out). i was hoping that Jane would hatch some more but while i was mowing i spotted her and the baby out in the hen yard. so i ran and got her secured in a coop - and then put the rest of her eggs under a crazy hen who is brooding on... nothing. so it will either work or not.

thats the word here. sunshine and hot hot hot hot.

Well nice you had a spare broody. I have a chicken sitting on nothing too, but perhaps that isn't so bad, I can think of her as a spare, like an extra tire!

Sorry about the chick. I guess it will be reborn in a better place. Like under the crazy broody who will incubate Air. She sounds like she'd be a good Mama to him.

well today its already hot and swampy out there - we are bracing for the hottest day yet. heat index up to 110*!!!!

everyone was up and out early but wow its gonna be a looloo. the good/bad news is that it stormed every afternoon right when it was about to be the hottest... thank heaven it cooled off yesterday. the little ones seem to be doing ok and the hens seem to not be to upset. lots of them are digging around in the dirt which seems to make them happy.

the goats want to hide in the goat house - but its kinda hot and dusty in there so i dunno... i might close the doors and make them lay outside in the breeze.

thats the word here. everyone is hot. blech.

Yeah, it's disgusting here! And I have to get my driver's license renewed today. that's going to be a pretty picture!!

Ha! I had to get mine renewed last year when we moved the house and I had been outside in the upper 90s (no electricity yet) painting cabinets all day in the heat when I got the picture taken....that was pretty! I'm so embarrassed to show my license to anyone but at least right now it looks exactly like me
