SD - one of my other hens kept getting into my settin' hen's nest and laying eggs. one per day.... thats where i'm getting one chick per day. just crazy! the new one from today was a little overwhelmed by all the hoppin' around in the brooder!
but she's as cute as the dickens.
came inside for a big plate of maters for lunch. then .... more work work work
been mowing all morning so you know i'm also gonna have a big piece of cake. whoot!

at this writing we do not have today's chick - but oh boy yesterday's gal really makes up for it. she's a peach for sure. i'll have to check again in a few minutes b/c yesterday the new one wasnt here first thing.... and then she showed up right after i posted. ha!
yesterday was all about mowing (boo!) and tilling. so much tilling..... i'm getting my fall garden put together. we had such a weird spring that the current stuff feels like an F-
but
the maters are starting to roll in - and tonite we're having a classic farm meal - ham slice (on the grill - has anyone else done this???wow!) hopefully some fresh taters, green beans, and i might go and get some sweet corn. aside from the corn everything from the meal will be from our yard. i LOVE that!
sometimes all this SS stuff feels like an uphill battle. but i remember when we first got started and all i could dream about was the day that everything we had on the plate came from our efforts....and so i have to remind myself that its really happening now!
of course the bar has been raised so i'm lamenting that i didnt grow wheat to grind for bread.
more tilling and some planting before it gets hot. i've also been mowing down the hen/goat yard. we've made a lot of progress to get rid of the big crazy weeds that the goats wont eat anyway. so i'm pretty excited.
thats the update here...that and.. you know... watching the world markets crash and some guy on the today show saying its no big deal. uh-huh. maybe it will all magically get better. but i know a lot of folks who never once thought we are "out" of a recession - it kinda feels like the same old crap.. except that everyone is fatigued, exhausted, and resigned.
i'm gonna go and count my chickens.

I'm glad you said it! I wonder how you folks do it! I'm getting there with my one pig, 20 chickens, and a few scovies but I can't seem to get that gardening thing down. I'm having a time just trying to keep weeds and animals out of my strawberries!! PS: I hate pigs too!!! I've got an appointment with the butcher next week, these pork chops better be good!

Noooooooooooooo! not possible that it's that time already
I don't think there are any weeds my goats won't eat, except for maybe pigweed. In fact, they cleaned out all the weeds they could get to from their pen and somehow reached my pole beans which are a good 4 feet away from the fence. That goat turned giraffe on me last night!

LovinLife - some netting over those berries will do wonders in keeping birds out, but watch it - snakes get caught up in it.
Speaking of snakes - I found one in my hens' nest with an egg inside it. Yes, I screamed. Yes, hubby killed it. No, I'm not sorry, it gave me a heart attack. I know it was just a rat snake, or chicken snake, or black snake - whatever. And yes, I know they're useful. And I would have hugged it's cold slimy neck if it had been swallowing a rat. But darn it all, it ate an egg and I'm getting fewer than usual now. And my lazy, good-for-nothing hens were just standing around - they jumped into the fray when he chopped it's head off - I'm lucky he didn't chop one of their heads off - did I mention he hates snakes?
But, we do leave them alone when they're minding their own business and not ours. My daughter fussed when I posted it on facebook. I told her that was her egg it ate.
Happy Friday everyone. My picking chores are done and I don't have to sweat it out outside today. I'll think cooling thoughts for all you who do.
Oh, and yes, it's fall garden time. I have seeds for 6 different lettuces coming in the mail as well as 2 bok choi seed packets. DH has planted his beds of turnip, mustard, tender green, collard greens and spinach. We call him Mr. Green Jeans at the market in the fall.
