We used to have some sort of floating wick and there would be a layer of oil on top of water that the wick would burn. There would usually be flowers down in the water and these would be centerpieces for dinners and such. Sometimes there would be some color added to either the water or the oil, I forget which.

There are some really ancient oil/lard lamps made out of stone which can be seen in many museums. It is sort of a depression with a shallow channel coming out of it which the wick lays in. Put oil in the depression, lay a wick in the channel and light. I think the end of the wick extended past the end of the channel.

Interesting. I love old lamps and candles and such and I'd been thinking there MUST be a fairly simple way to burn different oils. What I come up with as "waste" or extra oil isn't likely to burn clean though, but I'll have to read more on this. :)

Just wanted you to know that I have been tearing up the house looking for cotton thread since i read this. :D i have a mixture that I heat with a tea light, kind of a simmering version of thieves oil, I use it all winter. smells great, and supposedly healthy for you. Might work, we are hardly ever sick. This would be great to use in lieu of tealight candles, or votives.

I've only notcied a smell when I use used cooking oil and blow the wick out- the whole room smells like fried chicken. Burns cleanly though, you just have to make sure you trim the wick every so often.

hmmm ... Might as well just try it then. I do use and reuse a lot of my oil in various ways, so what I consider as real waste oil is .... Bordering gross, LOL. :)
