Do you have dehydrated onions? Equal parts of mayo and sourcream with some dehydrated onions, some fresh cracked pepper, and parmesan cheese, with a bit of salt to taste is quite good. Of course to make it even better you need to make your own mayo :)

Try cream cheese, a bit of buttermilk, dehydrated or finely chopped onion, a bit of garlic powder, and maybe some chives. That's what I would do. I experiment a lot with food, and make my own things like ranch dressing and several other sauces and such. That sounds close to what onion dip would taste like...sans the preservatives.

What is your ranch dressing recipe? We have been deprived for a long time, b/c i can't find a recipe that makes a good ranch dressing.

Ranch dressing
---------------
1 cup sour cream
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 teaspoon onion powder
2 Tbsp. chives
1 teaspoon olive oil

This makes about a cup of dressing. It will keep in the fridge for a while. I generally toss any leftover( as if) after about a month.

Some folks use mayo, and that is fine to substitute for the sour cream, but the sour cream makes it much thicker, and I like a kind of thick dressing. Leave off the olive oil if you use mayonnaise for this recipe.

ETA: If you like peppercorn ranch you can add peppercorns. Spicy ranch add crushed red pepper etc. etc. This is just a base dressing recipe. Have fun with it, and experiment. I love it with a bit of crumbled REAL bacon, but I don't keep it as long if it has bacon in it, for food safety reasons. It usually doesn't last long enough to have to worry about it though. ;)

It's very similar to the one I have made several times, but mine had more spices. maybe that was overkill. I'll try it your way and see if I get any hits. (as in, will my kids like it :D)

edited to say thank you!

my kids usually are not fussy, but after having storebought ranch, it has spoiled them. I have been buying Renee's since it is the only onethat has ingredients i can put up with.

Sorry MsPony, back to oour regularly scheduled program. :p

You mean the onions? Beware!! Do NOT dehydrate onions in the house!!!!!. Your house will reek of onions for ever, and your eyes will burn. I always dehydrate in the summerin a dehydrator, and have many bags of dehydrated onions in the house overwinter. You could try fresh, but I never have.

IF you are going to dehydrate, do it outside, and cut them into small pieceslik you would for speghettie sauce or whatever. If you want flakes. If you want powder, justslice and dry rings, and then put in the food processor and whiz them. I use a coffe grinder though to get a good powder.
