This will only use a couple of pears, but it will cause you to fall in love with them !

My grandmother used to make pear preserves, called pear harlequin. They had chopped pears, canned crushed pineapple, lemon juice, and chopped maraschino cherries to make the color. I am hoping to make some this year when the pears come in. On a good whole wheat bread, nothing like it.

I just remembered another way I like to use pears, pear jello. I use pear sauce or puree and gelatin, and whatever other things I like. It produces a thicker set that I like. It's especially fun for kids. Applesauce works too.

We have an antique pear tree on the family farm that still produces. They are rather hard and tasteless for eating fresh and rather grainy for canning, so we make most of them into butter. We follow a regular apple butter recipe for the Crock-Pot. Sometimes we throw in a few apples with the pears. Turns out very yummy. :drool
Hi BeccaOH,

Do you have a specific recipe for the pear butter?

My folks back in TX have one of those pear trees. The pears were hard as rocks and grainy...you couldn't give them away! They mostly went to the horses. I am going to tell them about your recipe!
I'll try to remember to look it up, but you could probably find something basic for Crock-Pot apple butter to follow.

Shread them for use in a shreaded pear pie. I do this with apples too. It is delish. I don't have the recipe in front of me, but can find it and post later.

Pear preserves

Can them and give them for gifts at Christmas. I did this last year. Cut out a little circle of Christmas fabric and put it over the top of the jar with a rubber band, then covered the rubber band with ribbon. Printed my own labels on the computer and glued it to the jars. It was a big hit with my co-workers.
