I know chemicals get the blame, but usually it is the carbs. While some people are chemical sensitive, it's rare. The historical data shows that many cultures suffered from a variety of diseases and illnesses due to switching to a high carb diet from their ancestral diet long before these chemicals were commercially available.

When people eliminate artificial colors, dyes, etc... they are eliminating a LOT of carbohydrates since those chemicals are in processed carb-based foods.

I would start with a carb reduction and gauge behavior/health changes. If that doesn't work, look at dairy. Many people do have sensitivity to dairy. Certain cultures have a lactose intolerance level of 75-90%. Northern Europeans have the lowest level of lactose intolerance (around 5%).

don't forget that toddlers are just ACTIVE. might not be any actual issue going on :)

but it never hurts to cut out sugars. i'll let 'zilla handle the "all carbs are sugars" lecture and not repeat it ;) but also find out what the kid eats outside of the house.

kids in daycare, at friends, in school... handed sugar all day long.

Artificial colors , flavors, and scents are derived from petroleum. Our bodies were not created to digest petroleum. If I were to give my kids a spoonful of sugar they would be fine. If I were to give them a drop of food coloring they would be crying, confused, and aggressive. That being said, I give my children very little sugar. Most of the time fruit is dessert. I trust a mothers instinct to know when there is something wrong with their child.

Oh my goodness that is the truth!

DD7 and I talk a lot about what goes on at lunch and who is bringing what to school....these parents should be ashamed. And yet they complain that there are too many classroom parties, but their kids lunch boxes are filled with brightly colored little packages of NON FOOD. :barnie

DD had a brownie encampment last weekend...we all met at the leader's house for cinnamon rolls before they left. I fed mine a real breakfast at home and then when we arrived she had a cin roll with everyone else...but her little friend came with chocolate milk and cookies FOR BREAKFAST :th

Sorry...hijack over.

No freaking kidding! This is a constant battle for me. The bus drivers were the last ones we busted handing my son candy bars.

My brother made a small fortune in school selling candy to the kids without the forsight to bring their own junk food every day LOL.

Now there are vending machines everywhere. Open campus (which I approve of) and kids going to buy their own lunches because that is easier on parents - and getting cookies and doughnuts at the grocery!!

That isn't even counting what is brought in to classrooms or teachers bribing behavior with candy or anything else.

I was reading about the snacking epidemic LOL. Take your kids to any meets or games, and you are required to bring snacks. Kids go for snacks before and after all their events. You can't do any get together without junk food.

I guess I'm lucky my family was poor and anti social??

And, I agree... chemicals are up there with the carbs as an issue. We aren't meant to digest plastic. Who knew?

I think it's scary that people don't know what their kids are actually eating. Or doing, in general, for that matter.
