You guys are awesome. I am SO going to do this. Especially after reading that it can also be used as a dishwasher detergent. I go through so much of that stuff! And we are new to farm life, thus new to well water/septic systems. We've been talking about coming up with a way to limit the harsh chemicals that we're using. What a great idea! Thanks, all. Oh, and Hi, Beekissed. You're everywhere!

OK...I heard you all talk about homemade laundry soap. I got the A&H baking soda, Ivory soap, and Borax.
What is Fels Naptha and where can I find it? Do I have to have it to make my soap? Is Baking Soda the same as washing soda? Is Ivory ok? Thanks...cant wait to try making my own!!! :clap

Thanks for the welcome!

Yaklady, I even used the mixture to clean my carpeting. I thought it worked better than commercial products. I just diluted it down alot.

I would also like to add that our HE washer now seems to be running better since we have used this detergent for awhile.

Noooooo! Baking soda is not the same as washing soda LOL!
Both made by arm and hammer.I found everything in the laundry detergeant section of my average grocery store.
Find the Borax and near it should be Washing soda.Fels Naptha is a laundry soap that looks like bar soap, also near the Borax and washing soda, most likely.I was searching every bath soap aisle of several stores and then just happened upon the Fels Naptha while looking for the borax and washing soda.Enjoy.

Beekissed aren't you on BYH too?
I was silly and called myself Arin the chicken lady on BYC, Three Goat Mom on BYH and Dunegan Mountain Arin here whereas you guys were consistent. Not sure how I could change it now. I usually call myself "savingdogs".

I sure love the laundry soap and enjoy recommending it. I read on another thread how it can clean out the water deposits from drainage hoses with continued use according to this other testimonial I read.
But it isn't like anyone here works for Arm and Hammer or 20 Mule Team or Fels Naptha.

As you heard already washing soda (sodium carbonate) and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) ARE different. Some of the formulas, like the one I use, actually use both. (1 soap, 1 borax, 1 washing soda, 1/2 baking soda) I know several people who use Ivory as the base soap. It will work. I use homemade lye soap for my base soap. Others use Fels Naptha or Zote, which are both formulated as a laundry soap to start with.

Just be sure what you use is a real soap... not a detergent bar, which is what most commercial "soaps" really are.

And welcome to Sufficient Self! :frow

Arin, you can contact a mod for info on how to change your name on here....I think they have helped others.

Yes, I'm on all these sister sites, which are the best forums I've found online yet. The format is easy to use and quick, the boards move quickly and one doesn't have to wait for a week or two for someone to answer a question.

Hey, gals! I don't know if anyone has already tried this before, but we've started making the liquid laundry soap a little differently here and I wanted to let you all know an extra money saving step...sorta.

Instead of cooking this mixture on the stove....and forgetting it and letting it boil over~like I do.....

Mom, the Bat, decided to grate the soap, mix the powder ingredients in hot tap water, pour over the grated soap, stir, and let sit over night. In the morning, we had the gel substance that we usually divide into separate jugs and mix with water.

No heating, no simmering, no vigilance, no extra electric usage heating this stuff..... ME likey!
