Sounds like over tightening to me as well. Screw the bands on then back them off.

Sure you have a pan deep enough to water bath quarts of tomatoes ... you have your pressure canner! I would just put the rack in, fill it with enough water to cover the lids by and inch and then find another lid to fit the pot. ;)

BTW I have been canning for years and I still occasionally have stuff happen. Just recently I had two jars break in one canner full, the bottoms broke, so probably an old damaged jar. Also I had two lids pop off in the canner while learning to use my new Tattler lids. Stuff happens. :)
