I just made a bunch of plum jelly with mine. I wonder if plum butter could be done?
I made some plum butter. Well, what i actually made was plum/pear butter, but it was just plums before i added the pears. It is very good. Those two flavors really compliment each other. Tastes like Christmas.

ETA: The plums i had were VERY juicy, so it took a very long time to cook them down to butter, but the end result was great!

Did you mean that in a last supper Pontius Pilate way or a Euell Gibbons pine tree eating way? doesn't matter as Saint Nick is plum loco and will hunt you down. Texas may be big but Alaska is twice the size so there is no where to hide from an angry elf, well except for Iowa you could always move there (i saw a picture of a tree there once).

Xpc, I think a bushel of plums weighs about 60 lbs, so more like a peck or a peck and a half. Not sure. I'm sure I can get 6 pints of something out of them. :D

Thanks ofg.

PP, plum butter sounds fantastic!

I meant that in a family gathered around the fire reading about Jesus' birth and thanking God for His salvation kind of way. I also meant it in a cinnamon and nutmeg smells like Christmas kind of way.

Angry elves don't come to Christmas at my house.

Hey PP, I'm ready for that plum butter recipe now!!!
Haha! Well, i'm afraid i didn't really follow a recipe on this one. I was kind of wingin' it.

However, it might be helpful to know that i started with the instructions at this link for pear butter.

http://www.pickyourown.org/pearbutter.htm

I think that link says something about orange juice and whatnot - which i did not follow. I skinned and pitted the plums and then ran them through the blender to pulverize them (i don't have fancy things like food mills yet). I put the crock pot and added sugar. I can't say i remember how much. I added as much i thought was necessary at the time. You can add sugar any time, so it's not too big a deal.

The spices i used were cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and a tiny bit of ginger. More cinnamon than the other ingredients. If i remember right, it was in the crock pot for several days. I would put it in the fridge at night. I could have used a pan on the stove just as well for this.

I added pears to mine for a combo flavor and cooked the butter down until it was thick enough for my liking. Mine is very thick. After it's canned, i want to be able to dip a spoonful and turn the spoon up-side-down without any hint of it sliding off.

I think that the orange zest would be tasty in this - specifically for plums. It would add a little more Christmas to the flavor. ;)

Sorry for not being more helpful. I was experimenting when i did this, so i didn't get very exact about anything.
