I was looking at recipes for the future, and was thrilled to discover that Radiant Life has put together kits for making the raw milk formula.
Don't freak out at the kits costs though. Fermented CLO is a part of the cost, so that jacks it up a fair amount.
For those that have various ingredients on hand, you can make your own kit.

Raw Milk Baby Formula

Makes 36 ounces.

"Our milk-based formula takes account of the fact that human milk is richer in whey, lactose, vitamin C, niacin, and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids compared to cow's milk but leaner in casein (milk protein). The addition of gelatin to cow's milk formula will make it more digestible for the infant. Use only truly expeller-expressed oils in the formula recipes, otherwise they may lack vitamin E."

The ideal milk for baby, if he cannot be breastfed, is clean, whole raw milk from old-fashioned cows, certified free of disease, that feed on green pasture. For sources of good quality milk, see www.realmilk.com or contact a local chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation.

If the only choice available to you is commercial milk, choose whole milk, preferably organic and unhomogenized, and culture it with a piima or kefir culture to restore enzymes (available from G.E.M. Cultures 253-588-2922 or http://www.gemcultures.com).

Ingredients

* 2 cups whole raw cow's milk, preferably from pasture-fed cows
* 1/4 cup homemade liquid whey (See recipe for whey, below) Note: Do NOT use powdered whey or whey from making cheese (which will cause the formula to curdle). Use only homemade whey made from yoghurt, kefir or separated raw milk.
* 4 tablespoons lactose1
* 1/4 teaspoon bifidobacterium infantis2
* 2 or more tablespoons good quality cream (preferably not ultrapasteurized), more if you are using milk from Holstein cows
* 1/2 teaspoon unflavored high-vitamin or high-vitamin fermented cod liver oil or 1 teaspoon regular cod liver oil3
* 1/4 teaspoon high-vitamin butter oil (optional)1
* 1 teaspoon expeller-expressed sunflower oil1
* 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil1
* 2 teaspoons coconut oil1
* 2 teaspoons Frontier brand nutritional yeast flakes1
* 2 teaspoons gelatin1
* 1-7/8 cups filtered water
* 1/4 teaspoon acerola powder1, 2

1. Available from Radiant Life 888-593-8333, www.radiantlifecatalog.com.
2. Earlier versions of this web page called for 1 tsp of bifidobacterium infantis and 1 tsp of acerola powder--these were typos.
3. Use only recommended brands of cod liver oil. See our recommendations here.

Instructions

* Put 2 cups filtered water into a pyrex measuring pitcher and remove 2 tablespoons (that will give you 1-7/8 cups water).
* Pour about half of the water into a pan and place on a medium flame.
* Add the gelatin and lactose to the pan and let dissolve, stirring occasionally.
* When the gelatin and lactose are dissolved, remove from heat and add the remaining water to cool the mixture.
* Stir in the coconut oil and optional high-vitamin butter oil and stir until melted.
* Meanwhile, place remaining ingredients into a blender.
* Add the water mixture and blend about three seconds.
* Place in glass bottles or a glass jar and refrigerate.
* Before giving to baby, warm bottles by placing in hot water or a bottle warmer. NEVER warm bottles in a microwave oven.

Time Saver: Bulk preparation
Homemade Formula in just 10-15 min per day!

By following these guidelines, your formula ingredients will be pre-measured and ready to go from the freezer for a couple months.

* Ice cube trays filled with whey (buy from farm or make at home from yogurt), 2 TBSP per cube. Frozen, then popped and stored in plastic ziploc bag in freezer, ready to toss in recipe.
* Ice cube trays filled with cream from raw milk dairy, 2 Tbsp per cube. Frozen, then popped and stored in plastic ziploc bag in freezer
* Ice cube trays filled with 2 tsp coconut oil, 1 tsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 1 tsp expeller-expressed sunflower oil, 1 tsp Cod Liver Oil. Once frozen, pop them into a ziploc bag in freezer.

Batch preparation:

* Two cups filtered, boiled water in small stainless steel saucepan on stove, medium heat
* Remove 2 TBSP water from pan
* Stir in 2 tsp gelatin, whisk until dissolved
* Stir in 4 TBSP lactose, whisk until dissolved
* Stir in 2 tsp nutritional yeast, whisk
* Turn off heat, throw in 2 cubes whey, 1 cube mixed oils, whisk often while preparing blender ingredients
* In blender, 2 cups raw milk
* Add 1/4 tsp acerola, blend gently
* Add 1/4 tsp probiotic (bifidum infantis), blend gently
* Once cubes are dissolved in water, give a final good whisk, then
* Pour into blender while blending gently.
* Pour into glass Pyrex measuring cup (can't pour into bottles directly from blender spills too much).
* Pour into glass baby bottles as soon as possible before separation occurs.

Notice the certified disease free parts. Raw milk is scary if you know what is out there. I can't tell you more than that. My information source.... my fiance. He's a vet. He gave me a brief overview that scared the bejeezus out of me. We adults make our choices with knowledge, but we are talking about giving this "formula" to an immunocompromised person!

You should wander over to the CD site and see that actual stats on raw milk issues.
Almost non existent today, and, when an issue is cited, you will never see the actual science and court papers proving that most of the issues were fabricated.

Illness does happen, but it is very rare with raw milk. It is not all that rare with pasteurized though :(

This book is the best!

I want to second both Tortoise AND BB.

Raw milk CAN be dangerous. However, it's also incredibly good for you. I LOVE raw milk (in fact I'm enjoying a glass of it right now) but I also know exactly who I get my milk from, I've pet their cows and seen their farm.

I've also seen what a bacterial infection can do to an otherwise healthy infant. It isn't pretty. Personally, I wouldn't make this formula unless it was coming from MY cows, milked by MY hands (or equipment).

Yep! The goat milk version is even better ;)
Be informed, and you will come out a whole lot better in the end.

I would seriously reconsider this. I love natural and whole and raw. But how easy is it for there to be poo in the milk? I don't think this is a place I could have gone when my kids were babies.

And what's the point of the gelatin in the recipe?

I'm sorry to be a downer, but this really makes me cringe to think of the possibilities with a newborn with little immunity, since their immunity comes from breast milk and obviously this will not be possible with this formula...

The number of drs looking at this recipe and standing behind it is growing every day.
Do a little research, and you will see how many thousands of babies who are unable to drink formula and breastmilk was in low supply, have thrived on this.

I am just offering the info, and if you want to gripe about it, then talk to the Weston A Price Foundation and the scientists that formulated it :)

Pasteurization does kill pathogens, but it also allows farmers with sloppy operations and unclean equipment to not kill their customers. It doesn't mean the pasteurized milk is more nutritious.

Abi has a milk share. I get their newsletter since I sometimes drink their milk. They test weekly.
