So it took me a while, but the last time I was at Whole Foods I decided to see what all the fuss was about and bought a bottle of comercial kombucha. I really liked it and I'm ready to try making my own. Are chances good that I will like homemade if I liked the store bought? What is a good source for a starter? Am I going to end up with bottles of scary mushrooms the size of a septic tank all over my house?? Enquiring minds (or is it inquiring minds.....????) want to know.
Maybe if it wasn't a mushroom related thing (I do not like them!!! Except for portabellos.) Maybe if I hadn't just reread that thread about the scoby in the septic tank. :hide

 DH just suggested that I toss a scoby I found in a bottle down the sink. He said, "Didn't you tell me kombucha was good for the septic tank?" I said, "NOOOOOOOO!!!!" and reminded him of that story.... :ep

It is not a mushroom, which you know by now from your research! Homemade anything is always better. Unpredictable, but better. If you can't get a scoby closer to you, I'm sure I can get one to you somehow, we could meet up. After all the kids are on the ground and healthy, that is....

OK, now I am thirsty....

I have had kombucha left in the bottom of the glass turn the dishwater into gel overnight.
Now I am sitting here horrified. I have rinsed a little extra kombucha down the sink if I don't want to drink a squiggly in my glass.

Is my septic tank going to come to life?
I'm suddenly very very glad we are moving in a month or so.

Home made is better, but a little different.

I love it although I think I have killed mine off. topped drinking it for a while. Once in a while I buy a bottle, but it is rare because it is pricey!

Go for it, you will be glad you did!

Adding my urgings to go for it! We love it, even the kids. Maybe especially the kids :)

Dace, I passed one along to a friend. Her brother has acid reflux and having personally seen it help DH, asked for a startup.
She forgot to feed it for a while, well over 2 months, she got caught up in a remodel. There was still plenty of liquid in the jar and no mold, so I told her to start over with fresh tea and a couple of cups of the old tea & to watch for mold. Hers is growing faster now than mine was :)

Thanks! I can't believe I spent almost $4 for a bottle.

Any thoughts on this site?

Oh, good grief, look at the price! I will mail you some since I doubt we could meet up during kidding season here on Blue Viola Farm and with Little League season and new goat season for you!

But on the other hand, those strainers look nice..... I wonder how fine the mesh is.
