Oh, ok. Just cuz I like you so much, I will give them one more try. :)I must admit, though, that my dad bit into one once and it was full of bugs. I think that was the last time my mom cooked them, and I made them once about 15 years ago. Hubby didn't like them either, so I just didn't buy them again.
Yay!! A possible convert!

Ahem. I hate to brag, but one CSA mom turned up her nose the first time they got the sprouts. After they had them, they kept buying more and more from me on the side since her kids were begging for them! I kid you not!

Yes, carmelized is so, so good. It seems like anything from the brassica family is super exceptional stir-fried with onions, garlic, potatoes, carrots, either separately or all together. We hardly have our cabbage and sprouts any other way.

They just must not be overcooked. Crisp-tender is what you're aiming for. Overcooking leads to stinkiness :D

I am a sneaky evil parent and I admit it.

All of my children (now adults) LOVE brussel sprouts.

Here is why...

When they were all little and had NEVER had any brussel sprouts before I waited for a busy day when all of the kids were good and hungry. Then I fixed a big bowl of brussel sprouts cooked just done and slathered with butter and a dash of salt. I sat all of the kids around the table and placed the bowl in the middle of the table.

Then I told them,"Here are some brussel sprouts. Now I only have this one bowl of them and boy are they good. I know you all are hungry but you need to be nice with each other and share them."

Then I left the room. Of course, true to the nature of all children, they began beating each other and fighting over the sprouts trying to be the one that got the most!

They have loved them ever since. Even to the point of weirdness!

One day I was in the store shopping with my three grade school-agers and like all kids in a store they were begging me for something... " Please buy us brussel sprouts! Please. Come on we have been good." (They actually did this!)

A woman in the store stopped me and seriously asked me, "What on Earth is the matter with your kids?" Well the verdict is still out on that one...

What a wonderfully evil parent you are/were!

I hate it when people tease kids about eating foods they assume the kids will think are yucky. Like "eat up that broccoli so you can have some yummy dessert..." I'm thinking, "Knock it off! My kids LOVE broccoli, and now they're wondering why they must eat it to get a treat!"

I tried this simple recipe from the Whole Foods website the other day and it was really good:

1 pound Brussels sprouts
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons shaved Pecorino Romano cheese

Preheat oven to 400F. Trim the stem ends of the Brussels sprouts and pull off any yellow outer leaves. Halve each sprout lengthwise, then toss in a large bowl with oil, salt and pepper.

Transfer sprouts to a rimmed baking sheet and roast, stirring once or twice, until deep golden brown, crisp outside and tender inside, 30 to 35 minutes. The leaves that are loose will be especially brown and crispy. Transfer sprouts to a serving bowl, scatter Pecorino Romano over the top and serve.

Oooh, that sounds wonderful! I have sprouts I brought in from the garden last night--This thread was making me drool. I will try this recipe, only I have fresh Parmesan.

I think the trick with most veggies is get them really fresh, preferably organic (there really IS a flavor difference) and then keep it simple so their flavor can shine through.

NOT Southern, Ca. :)
I made a big bowl last week. I think it was the first time my younger two had ever seen brussel sprouts. I steamed them then just added salt, butter & pepper. I did the 1 bite no thank you rule. My dh was the worst I had to glare at him from one end of the table to try them and set a good example. My son loved them of course but my girls were very reluctant.

I will just keep trying.

How about cheese? Maybe it's Wisconsin showing through here :), but cheese sauce can get kids hooked on a lot of different veggies! Or even dip. I can't think of a dip for sprouts right now, but I'll keep thinking...
