Thanks, FD. Being a vegetarian, I don't keep lard around (;)) but would be willing to get some if it makes her feel better. The ointment I used is a Vaseline product meant for babies, so you'd think it's safe, but...Hey, whatever works.

I do have some Blu-kote, does anyone think that would help?

Oh - BB, just saw your response - how much cod liver oil? Not sure where I'd get raw honey aound here...:/
Most grocery stores cell little tubs of raw spun honey.
I give 4-5 drops of Blue Ice cod liver oil. Repeat again in a couple of days.
You could use Carlsons, but it has very low amounts of processed vitamins, so you would need to use more.

Not really what you want to see when you're eating pizza. :sick
Sorry, DD - guess I should've edited to include "graphic" warning. :p Just thought pictures might help with a diagnosis.

I guess my main concern is whether this is something that I can treat myself or whether it's more serious (i.e., some internal problem). If it's something more "cosmetic" than anything, I would like to at least treat for pain (gosh, it sure looks painful) & then figure out how to stop it.

I will head off to the store later to see if I can find anything suggested so far...

its hard to tell from the picture but is there scabbing? if so it could be that the other chickens are picking on her.

weve got one right now an australorp that started dropping feathers in november and has no feathers at all on her lower back orround her butt (yet has healthy feathers everywhere else, including tail...
were not sure if its a realy bad moult, of if something else is going on (no lice ive checked and no other hens showing the same symptoms...)
but her skin is read and chapped sometimes from the cold...

weve been using bag balm to keep the skin protected from any wind and keep it moisturized...but it could just be that someones picking on her and plucking her...:(

mabe the same issue going on in your flock?

It didn't really bother me. I'm not quite that squeamish. :hugs
