At this point in time who even knows what's going to happen <throws hands in the air>

In principle, though, our plan has always been to wait til his pension is maxed out (5 yrs from now) or the mortgage is paid off (probably about 10-12 yrs from now) and then sell this place and move somewhere that will be easier to physically manage in older age. (Somewhere with no drainage ditches that need feet of snow/ice shovelled out multiple times per winter, etc). The kids will still be in school but they will just have to adapt to moving, what can you do.

We've always talked about staying in this general part of the province but further from Toronto, not *totally* out in the sticks though, and somewhere with same or milder winters as we get here. We've talked about the Peterborough area, the Quinte area, or Orangeville (don't know why I'm bothering to write that since probably only one or two other people on this forum even know the geography up here LOL).

I can think of lots of places in the US I'd love to retire to (although my husband would *never* move to the states), but it would be unimaginably stupid to do that when there is fairly comprehensive free health care up here :p

My step dad's place is paid off in another year and he retires in two. *crosses fingers* Hopefully things go smoothly for him :)

Retirement? What is that? And why bother?

I think I'd rather run till I drop. I honestly can't imagine not having an occupation that demands my presence.

I want the farm, with an extra house or two. Some of my kids want to live on the property. If that pans out, we can just keep going until we fade out. :)

Retirement doesn't mean you do nothing. (Well unless you WANT it to mean that). I know many people who end up *busier* after retiring than before.

It just means you have more choice as to what you do, because of having built up a sufficient financial cushion/foundation.

Also, "run til I drop" sounds good in a perfect world but for people who start running into significant physical limitations it can be useful to have planned things such that you do are not forced into perpetual HARD running just to keep food on the table, if your body becomes no longer up to the task ;)

Just sayin',

I like having a business that demands my attention. I've run a business from home for more than 10 years, we intend to still do so on the farm, it will just BE the farm.

My goals are maybe backward. I'm starting to heal up. We are starting another family, so at the mid-point, we're starting over in some ways. But I expect my health and strength to get BETTER over the next years (and there's enough evidence to prove that this is a logical assumption).

I know that to KEEP my health, I will need to keep working hard. A farm and kids, a business, etc, demands that I get up in the morning and do for something else what it can't do for itself.

So I don't want to retire, because I want that need to be there. I just don't think I'll keep my health without it.

oh yea retirement is very personal to everyone obviously.....how one wants to handle their older years is literally "just what they want to do"

for me, pitching the 'true real hard work' is what I want. I want free time to just "do nuttin' all day....if I choose lol

I want to keep my health by walking miles on the beach, swimming in the surf, taking hikes thru the Grand Canyon...walking thru tourist towns, etc. I want to travel...I won't be just sittin on the porch in a rocker, again, unless I have that big urge to do it

but I am sure not going to be lifting those heavy 70 lbs bales of hay again when old --no desire to do so

Retirement...we have some money saved.
I'll probably get bored and go to college just for spite because I know one of my kids will be waiting for me to kick off so they can live it up  Not really...I hope :hide

I live with my best friend :hu What more can I ask? I'm not changing anything that doesn't have to be changed. :)

*sighs* IMHO, that's where the "till I drop" part comes in. I can't forsee an opportunity to stop working until my body/mind absolutely gives out. Just can't imagine it. I don't think Social Security or Medicare funds will be there for me (I'm almost 53 now), so I will have to keep working if only for the health insurance.

Fortunately, I LOVE my job!

....ok....I do have this pipe dream of having a bed and breakfast retreat for missionaries. We went to one in Austria when we lived in Croatia, and it was very simple but such a major blessing and rest. That's my dream when I'm not being fatalistic!

Yikes don't say that please
I am 49 and counting on that SS money, but I do think "we", the older ones are going to be the last to get it. I read they said it should last til 2030 (fingers crossed) if they don't make some changes to protect it.

Too bad none of the politicans "will need" their SS money to survive. If they did they might worry about it. Since they are millionaires, that SS check don't mean anything to them personally. oh well :th
