Well my baby girl, Lillian, is here. I have been using reusable diapers on her. I love them. My husband wasn't thrilled at first, but he hasn't said anything since. I love saving the money.

I used cloth on all three kids and NEVER used any disposables. The ones we had (remember tiny baby son is 6'2" and 22 years old now!) we got at I think JC Pennys. They sell them now at Babies R us Gerber Prefold Diapers.

Diapers are really easy once you learn a system of management for them. I rinsed the pooy ones in the toilet and then placed them in a borax/pre soak bucket with a good lid.

My cleaning method was highly automated. I dumped diapers and presoak in the washing machine and set it on spin. Then I added the detergent (remember this was BEFORE I started making my own laundry soap) and BLEACH. I used light bleach EVERY time. They were washed on hot with the longest cycle. When they were done, I washed them AGAIN on hot with no additives of any kind - just the hot water. This acted like a good double rinse. Then into the dryer.

I have three kids two years apart, so I had one or sometimes TWO in diapers for a straight 6 years! I could push washing machine buttons far easier than I could load up 3 babies into the car to go buy diapers that I had no money for. I could change a diaper and stay asleep after a while!

By the way my kids were allergic to Zinc and so I could use only A and D ointment for hineys and the few times I had a disposable on them they all broke out. Cotton is a far gentler material.

If you make your own do you need a cover for them? How can you get them not to leak?

You get get covers for them. Several types were mentioned here in earlier posts. I raised my baby 28 years ago, so I don't know about all the new stuff.

Sebrightmom, Congratulation!!!

I love the BumGenius covers. I have four of them. What I have been doing is using the cloth diapers inside the covers. It seems to be working really well. I haven't tried making my own yet.
