Yep, I figure all the brushy stuff and sticks are free fuel.

I made a tin can version of this in grade school.

I could see a rocket stove used for scald water during butchering poultry. :D

Oh, great idea! We hauled water way out back (away from the eyeballs of the neighbor's daycare!!!) when we processed two turkeys. If we do dozens of chickens one day, the stove idea will come in handy!

That is my plan. ;) I'm going out "brick shopping" today after lunch. My daughter gets off early today and I think it will be a fun project for the two of us. :)

I hope to use it all summer when it gets too hot to cook inside. (Although, I can't imagine this house heated up at the moment, I'm so cold my nose is running!)

So after all this time BBH inspired me to finally finish this project. This was easy to build, a little challenging to start (I am terrible at starting a fire) and was 3 bricks short so I had to use regular landscaping on the second layer (which I will replace with firebricks eventually) This is the perfect some what portable cooking device, especially in an emergency situation. It cooked eggs in just a few minutes and I am sure would boil water just as quick. We will experiment more this weekend with the kiddos.

I am going to move it to a better place when I get the new bricks, I can see using this in the summer for "fun" cooking with the kids.

OK, this is back on the top of my list to do, after taxes are done and the folks are settled in their new digs. And after the barn is cleaned for the goatie babies, etc....

I have to clean up all the fallen branches from my pasture, and was burning them in my copper fire pit thus far. Now I am inspired to use all those btu's for something useful, and the first useful thing is to build one and learn a new skill!

Thanks for keeping the inspiration going!

Camera and computer are not on speaking terms at the moment. :barnie

This evening, I attempted to do the old red rooster in, long story short he is still running out there with the hens...

Anyhoo, I used my rockin' rocket stove to bring the scalding water up to 150 degrees while I mustered up the courage to cut his throat. He was released b/c apparently I'M the chicken  but we decided to see how long it took for the water came up to 150.

It took my giant (rooster sized) pot full of water about 20-25 minutes to come up to temp using my new rockin' rocket stove. I only used about the equivalent of 2 logs worth of kindling wood too....NOT BAD!!!
:thumbsup
I was just going to use the almost boiling water to boil a bunch of eggs until I remembered I put dish soap in it.

It is sure going to come in handy this summer when I don't want to heat up my kitchen with the stove.

Thank you Ldychef!!!

My daughter had fun tending the fire and I used the hot soapy water to wash dishes in the sink. :p

It took about 15 twigs to cook the eggs, I imagine if you had bigger kindling it would take less. I saved all my pruning from our mesquite trees last year for this project.
