When I was in basic back in 1982, I had KP duty. There was 2 boxes of lettuce and the SSGT told me to pull the rotten leaves of and put it in a box. By the time I removed all the brown leaves the lettuce was averaging the size of a baseball. That SSGT was seriously PO'd when he saw that I followed his orders. After that I just always assumed that the ARMY just used food that was rejected by the grocery stores.
One thing they did teach us to Basic was to always go through the chain of command. Hate to say it but your son is probably a pariah now. They will keep him doing scutt work because he is protected. However it's doubtful he will get higher than a Spec 4. The Army likes to take care of their own problems within their unit. Out of site means the problem doesn't exist.
The chow hall at the Battalions I was stationed with were excellent. I actually managed to go from 180 to 220 in 4 years. We ran 4 miles every day along with 1/2 hr of PT. I was in Schweinfurt at the 1/10th artillery and in Ft Bragg, can't remember our battalion designation.
they had fantastic cinnamon rolls./ As for why they don't just eat MRE's. Those pics you showed are better than MRE's. When I was in we had C-rats, then they switched to MRE's. Everyone preferred the C-rats. We used to trade stuff. They had a real good pound cake that we smothered with cocoa powder mixed with sugar. It was good. Take my word for it. When you are in the field any food taste great.
By the way those care packages from home are a real treat. Whenever you get a care package you all the sudden have a lot of new friends. Even the CO will come by to snarf a cookie or two.
