Salad Sac -no more plastic spinner!

My salad spinner is plastic and I'm working to eliminate plastic from the kitchen. I had just told DH there was no way I was getting rid of it because how else would I get my greens rinsed and dried and crisp. My boss came back that weekend from the Atlanta Gift Show and she was showing me all the stuff she got. She had got something called a Salad Sac and she ended up giving it to me because I was so excited about it.

It's quite simple, basically a terrycloth bag with drawstring. I used it last night and it worked great as far as crisping my lettuce. We'll see if everything stays fresh. Anyway, just thought I would throw that out there. It would be simple to make too. Two large washcloths stiched on 3 sides to form a bag and a drawstring added. Apparently this is how things were done way back when before plastic and now is in vogue again.

So...how exactly do you use it? Rinse the greens in a strainer, then put them in the Sac to dry, & they stay crisp...?

I have been using a pillow case to dry my greens and herbs. You just put the lettuce in the case and swing it around over your head. Is this sack the same idea? I probably looked odd standing in my front yard swining a pillow case around over my head, but it did an excellent job of drying the lettuce.

Heeheehee. That's what I was picturing, too, but didn't have the nerve to say it.

You just wash the greens and stuff them in the sac. No whirling about or using a spinner. The cloth absorbs the excess moisture from the greens rather than spinning them. Then the damp cloth is what crisps them.

So after you use the pillowcase as the spinner, what do you do with them? Do you put the greens in a separate container then or do you just put everything, pillowcase included in the fridge? I think the idea with terrycloth is that you don't have to take it outside because the material is more absorbent.

It's just funny how eventually everything old becomes new again.

We have some plastic lettuce containers that we saved from buying lettuce in the past that we use, and we store the lettuce in the crisper drawer. I like this terry cloth sack idea though, and you're right, it definately sounds easy enough to make.
