Does anyone use these for medicinal purposes?

I've discovered some growing wild on my property, and i want to capitalize on the possibilities.

This is the time of year to harvest root bark from sassafras. I want to, but the sassafras on my property is tiny and I would have to kill it to get enough roots. They don't grow as big here as they do in the south. There is a recipe for a sort of rootbeer in NT that I would love to try. I love the smell of sassafras.

Mine are tiny too, which is why i thought they were weeds. But i'm thinking that if i'm nice to them and treat them like i want them, i might get them to grow nice and big. I'm hoping anyway.

I read on wikipedia that the sassafras tea was banned by the fda for a while. Anyone know about that? Is it actually safe in small amounts or what?

Yes, do a google search. It is safe in small amounts. Don't drink quarts of sassafras tea every day, though!

It contains Safrole. Safrole is a carcinogen. (cancer causing agent). An occasional cup or two of sassafrass tea brewed from roots or leaves won't hurt. If you are a sassafrass tea addict you can purchase sassafrass extract or concentrate that has has the safrole removed. I buy Pappys sassafrass tea concentrate at the local Giant Eagle. It's a liquid, you'll find it in the tea section.

Do you consider Mulberry wine "medicinal"? We make Mulberry wine whenever we can get to the berries before the birds. I've also made jelly.

What happens if you drink alot?:idunno
Tests in rodents indicated that it could cause cancer and irreparable liver damage.

Others say that's true, but to consume comparable amounts you would have to drink a LOT of sassafras tea! They say that the risk of illness from sassafras tea is quite a bit less than the risk from alcohol. So i guess, if a glass of wine a day is good for you, so......
