I think us Yankees do it the same way, unless it's below freezing outside. Then... After step 3, the remaining steps move to the front door. During the remaining steps, the front door is open and shut multiple times. Add step #9: watching from the window to be sure they have safely backed out of the driveway and are truly on their way.

My Grandma and Aunt would always LITERALLY have their last words be as we pulled off from their farm - “Be careful, watch for deer!”

My daughter in law picks up grandkids every evening during the week after she gets off work. After hugs I say exactly that “Be careful, watch for deer!” :D

Just said that to cousins last night...."Drive careful, watch for deer!" Standard issue good-bye in these parts.
