Steering wheel shakes when I'm going 40-60 mph and esp when I'm applying the breaks at speeds over, say 30 mph. What gives? (Honda Civic '05.)

Is it as simple as balancing my tires or something more?

Thanks!

That would be my first guess unless you were curb jumping. A quick fix to see is to rotate your back tires to the front.

edit: how old are the breaks? did you do a bunch of emergency stops? my grand prix got warped rotor and did something similar.

If it shakes BEFORE you apply the brakes, it is tire balance more than likely, possibly an out of round tire. If it shakes AFTER you hit the brakes, then you have warped brake rotors and are about due for a brake job.
One more question...........does it shake when you are accelerating, but stops when you let off the gas??? If so, you may have an axle shaft getting ready for a vacation..........

When was the last brake pad change? cold it be in need of new pads, and perhaps rotors. If your pads have worn out, the clamps will press down on your rotors when brakes are applied. Back brakes will do most of your braking, but sound likeyour rotors have been damaged If it i not too bad, you can get them turned as opposed to just replacing them.

Maybe??? I'm going on memory here since dh is the car fixer dude.

Ask about when people hear the break pad telltale a full 12,000 miles before needing replacement and thought it was just a squeak and once the pawl is worn away won't alert you anymore.

Curb jumping? Busted.

Just kidding. (I drive like a grandma.) It is reallllly hilly around here though. I had a break job done about 6 months ago. :/

It shakes while I'm just driving down the hwy. It really shakes when I'm breaking going down a hill, or when I start breaking at speeds over 30.
