Northern California's climate is great most of the time. But it is way expensive and they have too many laws for self sufficiency. And the taxes are high and I don't think it is the best environment for small businesses. I love it here, but I'd move in a heartbeat if I could get land somewhere with less restrictive laws.
Oh and except for not wanting to move away from my daughter ;)

Isn't Joel Salatin in WV? He had a pretty long list of pain in the patootie regulations he had to deal with on him farm.

As for Ohio, etc... sorry people. Anything colder than what I am doing now is out. People often think Colorado is cold and snowy, but the snow out here is polite and usually stays in the mountains where it belongs :D

I did look at a few towns in Texas, but I need to find that magic area too far north for the fire ants :D

I'm down in rural South Georgia - below the pesky gnat line (not the biting ones; those are near the coast), but the fire ants have disappeared and we're NOT complaining! Sugar ants, however, are another story ... Doesn't matter where I hang my hummingbird feeder, they find it and clean it out in less than 3 days *sigh*

And land is decently cheap. And while a lot of people are more conservative Republican, there's some Libertarians, too. And did I mention RURAL SOUTH GEORGIA? As in, today was the first day the high was in the 60's? And we still haven't had a frost yet, much yet a freeze? Where our seasons are as follows: almost summer, summer, still summer, and Christmas :)

Good luck picking a place!

Salatin lives in VA. He complains a lot about the regs, but VA has among the most liberal (not in the political sense) ag regs in the country. Makes me think he would complain about anywhere.

And the state you describe in your OP is Oklahoma. Parts of Texas might fit as well.

NOT Southern, Ca. :)
What I am seeing here is everyone recommending their own states. Which leads me to believe no place is perfect.

Virginia is a commonwealth. I lived there for 5 years in the Blue Ridge Mountains and I liked it. Very pretty state. I don't know much about their laws now though, how they would affect you as a small business owner.

What kind of business do you have, Wife? Your targeted market might be an issue as well by local demographics.

I love WV. People leave you alone here. That's all I'm askin' for!

High tax burden. Environmentalist wackos in abundant supply.
*snort* oh come on baby.. we could get together, burn some tires, pour some oil on the ground, and maybe we could go huntin' for some spotted owls.... we'll just leave the SUV's running while we litter in the forest and stomp on the wild flowers...while eating double burgers!

HA
;-)

it IS true that south of columbus (ohio) its not as bad (weather wise) as northern ohio but man.. its still pretty bad and the heat is hot in the summer, so to speak.

i keep wondering about kentucky.

if cali wasnt so weird i'd be living in northern cal right now and i would be the post master general of some little town with a sign that says "population 311".. but you cali folks is crazy.. so thats why we are about oregon (granted eco-nutz are in da house).

:)
