On my way to town today, I was driving down our deserted country road, and I almost hit a pug. DD and I caught it. I believe she was dumped, as her eyes are a terrible mess. Since I was going to town anyways, I took her into the vet. The vet even said she was dumped, her eye condition was pretty severe, and expensive to treat. he gave me some ointment to put in her eyes, but said in order to prevent the problem from getting worse, said it would be expensive. He said if I can not find the owners, it would be best to take the dog into to pound--she will be burdensome to treat. I believe he said her condition was called pennus, but I can't find any info on it when I googled it. Can any of you help me? She really is a sweet dog. It looks like she just had a litter of pups. I have her in my laundry room right now, and her eyes are bleeding. When we found her, they were completely crusted over--it was scary looking. They are really protruding, more so than normal even for pugs.

Can any of you offer any information on what her condition might be? and what the treatments might entail. I know Tort's SO is a vet, and I know Occam is a vet tech. any info will be gladly accepted.

Thanks!!

That was really nice of you to take her in and even take her to the vet. I hope it all works out for you.

Poor little thing! What is wrong with people?

I am surprised that the vet wont give you a break on treatment....I guess meds cost what they cost huh?

I hope someone can give you some good advice.

Wow, she is a realy sweet dog--no barking which surprises me for a small dog. Her eyes appear to have ulcers on them also. Poor girl. At the vets, they guesstimated her age to be about 4-5 yrs, by looking at teeth.

I have posted an ad on kijiji, but am not hopeful about getting a response. I'll see if I can get a pic up, but probably not until later today. She was really hungry. I'm going to brush her as she is shedding profusely, and once that is under control, I will let her into the rest of the house. thanks for the article.

I couldn't not pick her up. She's tiny, we have about a foot of snow on the ground, getting about another foot tonight, and she was out in the middle of nowhere. I really hope she wasn't dumped, but I think she was. If yousaw her eyes, youwould think the same thing. Poor girl.

Some people don't care. When we moved to the country we had 1 dog.(he has scince passed) but then we found a dog at the end of our driveway skin and bones. Kept him. Fat and sassy now. 1 month later I heard what sounded like puppies crying and found 2 brothers. Turned out to be my 1st male dog we founds sons. Kept them. Then my son found a puppy that did not even have his teeth yet. So I kept him to. Love them all. Everyone is fixed, have shots and on heartworm medicine. I don't understand how people can do that to a poor defensless animal. :somad :he

Well, I know there are alot of people in this town who are your typical backyard breeders--they just pump out puppies for the cash, and sell them for about $400. For alot of people this is a main source of income--that and welfare. They want the money from the pups, but can't put any of it into the proper care of the dogs. Not much better than puppy mills, imo. In this girls case, I think they decided to get rid of her, b/c her eyes were too bad, and when people came to buy their puppy's the breeders didn't want the buyers to see moms eyes, since it is a hereditary condition.

People are so trashy. Ugh.

Pugs, can bark, but aren't high on the list like other dogs :)

What about contacting a pug rescue, there are a number of Ontario-based ones listed on this page:

http://www.canadasguidetodogs.com/pug/pug_rescue.htm

A breed-based rescue like that may be more willing to take the animal despite its medical problems than a generic rescue or shelter would (and fix it up and rehome it, I mean, as opposed to saying they won't take it or taking it and euthanizing)

Best of luck, good on you for taking her in,

Pat
