I guess because I am home a lot and pinching pennies I try to cook some kind of "slow food" once or twice a week. Now that the weather is cooling it just feels nicer in the kitchen.

This weekend while camping I am going to try and do Beef Stew in my dutch oven over coals. It will probably be an all day event. Wish me luck.

Cooking soups does save a lot of money. Flavor-wise, homemade stuff is like the gourmet soups the grocery stores sell for $6 for a tiny container....and the homemade stuff is so much healthier.

I agree on the cost savings--they are big

soups and stews go a long way and make me feel very full very fast.

plus the "stick it in a crockpot" and walk away cooking is so wonderful to me--anything not keeping me chained to a stove is sweet haha

and leftovers are so delish heated up later---one of the best re-heats I can imagine

I love love love my mom's vegetable soup~!! All throughout the summer she tosses leftover veggies in the freezer - corn, peas, beans, okra. She just uses her canned tomatoes, adds some stew beef, macaroni noodles and potatoes YUM!!!!!!

My favorite is homemade chicken noodle with rice, onions, garlic and kielbasa. I can't stop eating it....so addictive!!!

I also like canned tomatoes, canned deer meat, onions, corn, rice, hot sauce, garlic and other spices.

TamLynn- I just saved that recipe for the curried pumpkin soup. Sounds like a winner.
Hubby is not into soup but I love it year round. Crock pots are great in the summer since they don't heat the kitchen up. In winter, I use the stove so it will add a little moist heat to the place. Made a pot of black beans last week and added dried onion, curry and a bit of pumpkin pie spice to it. Yummm. Hubby hated me that night, (curried beans) but it was so worth it.

My family loves these things when the weather turns (So do I--less work!) I usually never use recipes, so I will give you an overview. :p

I use my crock pot for these.

Chili-beef, beans, onions-occasionally corn, tomatoes, sometimes celery.

Cabbage Soup-Ground beef (or you can use ham, if you eat pork), green cabbage, onions, a couple tomatoes, carrots, celery, s&p.

Beef Stew-Roast that I cooked however many days ago, onions, carrots, potatoes, celery s&p.

Junk Stoup-My favorite-Any left over beef-any left over veggies-even mashed potatoes, s&p. :)

I haven't done a chicken soup lately since Gluten free noodles are spendy, but I plan on trying to make my own soon.

Thanks for all of the good suggestions! I will make sure to re-read this thread!

My favorite ever is Caldo Verde, it's a Portugese recipe (means "green soup").
I just made something similar last week and it was great! The recipe I used was called "Kale Soup" I subbed sweet potatoes for the white, used black instead of white beans and this recipe had 1/2 head of cabbage with the kale.

It was my first time using kale and I loved it! It held up really well in the soup.
