My wedding dress had been used in a bridal show and couldn't be altered so it was marked down 75% and then my aunt paid half of the remainder as a wedding gift. My two sisters where the only bridesmaids and we found their dresses on clearance after prom season for $25.
We rented a church campground at the local state park for $50. The plan was to have the wedding outside, but it rained all weekend so we did it inside.
We did a pot luck for dinner.
I think all total, with the tux rentals, my dress, the bridesmaid dresses, decorations, and reservations we spent less than $500.
I saw this on Occamstazer's blog and have been eyeing it ever since. I've been married 12 years and never plan to have to repeat the procedure, but my cuz is getting married next year and I'm helping her plan.
Lots & lots & lots of great, original ideas and most of them are thrifty
When I got married 8 years ago we did the whole thing, honeymoon included, for about $500. I bought a nice 'regular ol' dress (not wedding gown) off the sale rack for about 80% off, it was a pretty cream-with-flowers thing, and made a flowered thingie to go in my hair; we only had about 15 guests (family and close friends) and just went back to our apartment for a home-cooked buffet; and then spent a week at my husband's family's cottage. The big splurge was $200ish to rent a local municipal park's greenhouse-with-wedding-chapel-sort-of-thing.
Made the invites myself (got some nice handmade paper, I guess that was sort of a splurge too), cut local goldenrod and asters and whatnot for floral decorations, etc.
If we'd have already found a house to buy, at that point, we'd have done it *there* and saved the greenhouse rental fee.
But, everyone's different, do what you feel is right for YOU
Im getting married in October! My dress cost me 85 dollars at Dillards. The flowers and veil cost around 20 bucks. My invitations cost 11 dollars for 300 of them! I found some discounted scrapbooking paper and made my own. The college I work for is letting me use the grand hall for my wedding I've just got to "rent" the security. That's 25 dollars an hour. We are going to have finger foods, I am not paying for a full meal. Basic fruit and veggie trays, nothing big. We are planning on having alot of people there but so far it looks like our wedding is gonna run us MABEY 400 dollars. No tux's at our wedding either. Me and DF are the only one's dressing up. The maid of honor and best man are going to have t-shirts that say just that. Your wedding can be big and SS. Its the happiest day of your life, don't ruin it by being upset that you spent too much! Good luck and congrats on your wedding!!!
Congrats!!! Sounds like you've got a keeper . The cornfield sounds like it would be so beautiful! I would keep a list of things that can be done inexpensively and then things that you don't want to compromise on such as the photographer. One thing that we did on that was find a senior at the local college that was getting his art degree and wanting to go into photography. He already had a fairly substantial portfolio but didn't feel like he could charge the big $$ yet. He also didn't do any photo printing. He charged us for his time and then a set fee for all of the negatives. We were then free to print as needed whenever we wanted. (The printing and framing afterwards is where they make the most of their $$ and markup.)
When my daughter got married, she insisted on NO WHITE! She has loved black and silver since she was a little girl. So, her grandmother made her dress out of some beautiful silver satin with a black lace overskirt. I ordered the groom a pirate shirt of silver satin. The bridesmaids wore black strapless gowns and the groomsmen wore black slacks with black turtleneck shirts.
I did include some color - teal. Since the wedding was in December I found some very lovely silk teal colored poinsettias and some beautiful cream rosebuds (just sprayed lightly with teal paint). Silver ribbon abounded since it was so close to Christmas and that topped off the flowers just right.
Now, mind you, my daughter was in her 30's when she got married - she's 43 now and still into all this fantasy stuff. They have worn those outfits to so many fantasy dress-up things - we can truthfully say they've gotten their money's worth. (Of course the grooms family was shocked - but who cares?)
So, I guess what I mean with this long story is, it's your wedding - do what you want no matter how wild or weird. My daughter was thrilled with her day.
