I would love to start stocking up on a grand scale. Right now I have a 5 tier shelf in my laundry room stuffed tot he gills with caned goods, rice and beans. We just don't have anywhere to store larger quantities right now.

I read about using an old walk-in freezer as a food storage locker. That would work well for us if I could find one and someone with a bobcat to dig out a spot for it!!

You can build a walk in cooler pretty cheaply. Plywood, a little insulation and an old LARGE window AC unit. DAMHIK.

There are things that we all can do that require very little money. Growing a garden, even if it is in buckets on an apartment balcony. At the very least you get a few vegetables that you know aren't sprayed with poisons. Plus you gain experience in growing things that may come in handy down the road.

Collect some recycled materials and construct a dehydrator. Dehydrated vegetables and fruit store longer and take less space.

Search through the messages here and pick other members brains for more ideas. There are many possibilities, and a lot of little things can add up quickly.

Agreed. Everyone can do something, even if it's just buying one extra can of tuna or a bag of dried beans a week. Or refill your plastic milk, juice, or soda bottles with tap water and store that. No extra money spent, and now you have some emergency water.

Exactly. A bag of beans or split peas every time you go to the store adds up quick. That is how I put my stash together. $1 or $2 at a time.

If you are near a library you can also learn skills. Yes, *practical* is better than *theoretical*, but learning the theory is still better than learning nothing.

Whenever I go to the store my rule is... If you need one buy four. It is NOT going to be cheaper tomorrow. Especially spices I can't grow.
I also need to expand my shelving. I had better get to it as lumber is not going to be cheaper tomorrow.

Ha ha! I wasn't being totally literal. I do have quite a bit of canned goods in my pantry still. I do have 10 hens who eat too much(so much snow!). Hmmmm. Maybe it's time to stop procrastinating and think about what seeds to order for the veg garden.
