Hi! I just found this site - been on BYC and BYH for a few months. We have wild native persimmon trees, chickasaw plums, prickly pears and blackberries on our new farm. I knew about the blackberries and prickly pears, but didn't research the other two until DH started eating them. :ep

Then I had to find out what they were so I could tell the EMS people what he was suffering from, if he got sick!

Next year I'll be canning, freezing and drying lots of "free" fruit.
I love this land, there are so many "volunteer" plants!

This is what we're talking about, right?

I think I'll let the chickens have my share.

Those are the ones! You are supposed to just drop them briefly in boiling water with a bit of spice and use a spoon! :sick

I am not QUITE self sufficient enough however.

We all know that dandelion leaves are edible, but I have a gardening book from the early 1970's that has a small section on growing them in your garden.

Ah the 70s! That's when my dad made us eat them too. It was this year before I was willing to try them again!

Ok, don't make me be the one to test the roly poly vs shrimp thing.

Roly polys were my favorite insect to play with as a kid. Wonder if they will be my favorite meal as an adult?

Do I use shrimp boil? :drool
