Yeah NZ, I know a few people that have Wyandotte which seem a fairly easy bird to breed. I would have to keep in a coop as we have trouble with Hawks here killing chickens, they will kill large birds easily. Feral cats, and stoats which I already shoot/trap. I will be raising chickens for eggs mostly. Hot dry Summers, long wet winters. We had Hyline when I was a kid which are great layers, I just like the older breed birds.

I do like the Plymouth Rock.

We have a Leghorn who is wonderful and just hatched chicks for us. Otherwise our Barred Rock is pretty consistent and ok with confinement as well--but she is a bit vocal and can be bossy/pushy.

All depends on size of coop and run. My easter eggers and ameraucana have a 15x8 coop and 15x35 run. It's chainlink and netted. Keeps out hawks and coyotes. If the bears ever cause an issue, I'll have to run a hot wire.

Yep our run is 30x16--with hardware cloth all around with an apron out 2 ft on the ground and covered with tin. Keeps them dry, offers shade and then we wrap a majority of it in plastic in the winter so they have a place to hang out instead of just the coop

Anyone good at sexing chicks? I will have 4 week olds this weekend. I can wait a week or two to find out, but the sooner I know the sooner I can prepare my daughter as to which we are keeping and which are eventually going to the freezer

Im good with my silkies. I totally blew it on the easter egger chicks last year.
