Actually you smoke the hide after you brain tan it to give it color and halp waterproof it. I wouldn't use brains right now since it is warm outside and it will attract flies. During the winter is when we've tanned hides. They're less likely to spoil or get maggots when it is cool. It's been awhile since we've done it so I don't remember the steps right off hand.
