Ok, I'll fix social security right here and now. Refund all payments made in to the system to the individuals who paid them. Then disband the program completely, fire everyone and auction off the buildings, office furniture, etc. Of course, when you get your refund check, anything you drew out of the system would be deducted. Then people can take care of their own retirement and it can stop being used as a slush fund and a football for politicians.

I like this idea. :thumbsup I'm tired of hearing social security and medicare called an entitlement program when I have been paying into it since I was 18 years old and will probably never see a dime of it when I'm retirement age.

Good idea Wifezilla - but first, take back all the monies paid to those who paid nothing into the system.
And while you are about that one - let's suck blood out of a rock. It is just about as likely to happen.

I agree with the "sucking blood out of a rock" comment. I have two young relatives that have been on SSI for many years. In my opinion, neither one of them should ever have received any. They both just know how to work the system, and fake mental issues. Neither one of them has two pennies to rub together, but one of them has had five children (and has custody of none) and the other one just found out he has a third child somewhere (and all of them are on public assistance).
Frankly, I fear that when the silk hits the fan, they may come looking for me to bail them out with food, shelter, whatever. I would be concerned that they would be dangerous. There is no way that anyone could get one nickle out of either one of them. I think they are very representative of those who are receiving SSI.

I tend to agree with this. Your looking at taking money from babies and small children, as well as teenagers and adults. My father was on Social Security when I was growing up. Each of his children (three daughters and myself) received social security benefit checks as a result. In fact, those checks helped keep me clothed because he was not paying child support. Come to that, they also bought my first two cars (although I paid for insurance and gas and everything else out of my paychecks from various jobs I did in high school). That money isn't just about the "lazy bums who won't get off their rears and get a real job". And to be honest, I agree with your sentiment, but not the reality.

I'm not losing ANY sleep over the Iranian ships in the Atlantic...
Normally I wouldn't either, but a couple of things give me cause for pause.

Ahmadinejad is a "12'er", a member of a sect that believes that it is necessary to have global chaos and blood shed before their version of the messiah (which bears a striking resemblance to the Bible's Antichrist) can return. Now consider that Iran has practiced launching missiles into a low earth orbit arc for delivery of an nuclear EMP device. One device detonated over the central US at high altitude would result in a EMP pulse that would affect the entire continental US. Such a device could easily be launched by a frigate or even a small container ship for that matter.
Hey Mark,

We're in agreement about the threat Iran poses.

I'm just trying to temper the potential fear based off of a few comments here about specific things like Iranian warships off the US coast, that's all - like "this single event/thing is bad". It's been a while since I was really, really up to date on military hardware, but I think it's much harder than simply installing a ballistic missile on a small warship or cargo ship. Seawater is heck on things like rockets unless they've been specifically designed to withstand the corrosion.

There are a lot more low-tech ways to get the same or similar results.

Anyone remember this from the 1950's? I was a little late, but remember folks talking about it 1950's Bomb Shelters

WZ I am joining your fantasy.

While they are refunding the money they need to be sure to either give me my share of my employers matching funds which have been paid in for those same number of working years or refund it back to my former employers who should be made to give it back to me. And I want mine with interest. And not todays interest rate. I want an annual average for every year. And the interest on my money compounded at the average rate for each year. Fair is fair.

I don't have a rock handy but there is a small piece of petrified wood on my desk I will use.. Oh look......is that blood? Yep - but its mine. Seems like I busted my lip.:hit

I have been a sahm (stay at home mom) for the past 11 years. I am in my mid-30's. My family is blessed that my dh has a good job and we can live off one income. Someone gave me a comment the other day that I should start thinking about getting a job so I could earn my social security credits. I nearly laughed out loud at them. If and when I get a "real" job it will not be for the purpose of collecting social security some day. Do people really still think this way?
