Just trying to get things sorted in my mind and maybe its all a pipe dream but I was thinking it is probably time before mom forgets all the details.....or I do. :p
Get a recorder and go set down with your mom and START TALKING!! Even if you never get around to writing the book, you will always have your mothers voice and wisdom to fall back on. That would prove to be PRICELESS.

I guess all of us saying "Bee you should write a book". Finally sunk in. LOL Its about time.

Yes...that and everyone since I was in 5th grade telling me to write a book. I have no more excuses to not try now that my kids are about raised. I have a couple of books I have been mulling over all these years. One involves that extraordinary time spent on that homestead and another book involving all the wonderful women I have had the honor of knowing over the years.

Women like the lady from a small town here in the mountains who became a spy during WWII, jumped out of planes, lived as a man for two whole years in enemy territory, took pics of noted Russian dignitaries during a formal party aboard a yacht by stuffing her bra and placing a camera in her corsage. She graduated from a class of 11 people! Her story has always fascinated me and the details of her assignments have been classified for many years but I think it would be fine to not mention details and exact locations.

Or the woman who suffered bone cancer with such grace and class that she died laughing, literally, while her good children were caring for her tenderly. She raised 5 children by herself for 20 years, worked at a chemical plant, had tons of friends who cherished her every living moment and was an inspiration to all who met her. I will never forget her.

These women have inspired me and gave me strength in hard times when I thought about all they overcame to live their lives just how they wanted to live them.... and did it with style!

So many stories.....so little talent or time! :gig

Please write it. All of it . . . or any of it. I guess I'd particularly enjoy hearing about your childhood.

I think your story, particularly with the personal details, would be very intriguing. I also think now is a good time because so many of the general public are starting to think 'back to basics' ...maybe not in a serious sense like we all would think, but at least they are leaning in the right direction.

I think a book like yours would be well received as people are hearing off the grid, home grown, homemade, handmade, organic, hormone free, free range, grass fed, blah blah blah... more and more. These are all important words and phrases but to so many what these words mean or are implying is not really clear.... they don't really know how to process that information, they need to see it all in context...via Bee's Book of Wonders!

Ah...now I am rambling :)

I've often threatened to write a book called "My Hillbilly Soap Opera"!

Thank you all for helping me. It is definitely food for thought and I will have to start thinking about it. I don't want to tell anyone that I know....well, except you all.....because you know how folks react to that! Writing a book is not a normal activity around here and most would feel very skeptical about that endeavor.

I don't think any of them have read Pearl S. Buck, one of WV's more famous authors. Not that I could ever write like that but she was definitely the bomb!

I've talked about that several times but never acted on it. YOu are right....it would be priceless to have that so my kids could listen to it and their kids also.

Bee -- I read The Good Earth a few years ago, and enjoyed it a lot. Anything else by Buck you would recommend?

Drake, I was just telling my boy about that story and it still rings true today.....how people have deserted the land for material lifestyles and now want to get all that back. And how the poor, once aware of how the rich squandered the land, became just like them when presented with the same temptations.

I'll have to go back through my Buck books but this one is definitely one of my faves! I loved how they describe the foods and how that changed when they became wealthier....and how their health changed as well.

My favorite aspect of the book was how the main character invested everything he had into land and how that ended up paying off for him in the long run. Also, I found it interesting what he did when poverty/famine struck his area. I agree, there are some excellent quotes in there that are very relevant today!
