IME blossom-end rot is more often caused by erratic watering than by calcium deficiency per se. (Insufficient water interrupts the plant's Ca uptake, so you get the symptoms of Ca deficiency).
And yeah, I do get it a little bit on my virtually-unwatered garden. But not too much (b/c of lots and lots of organic matter in the soil, and encouraging deep roots on the plants) and the tomatoes that are bad I don't mind passing along to the chickens to be converted to eggs and meat
