Lovin' The Homestead
Well, I have been remiss on my journal what with the holidays and all. To tell the truth, after my chicks got killed, I kind of didn't care about SS for a few weeks. Then Christmas hit(took the week of Christmas and then last week as vacation), so its been non stop with all the kids out of school, holiday plans, playing Griswald, etc.
So on the power front, just about finished with the CFL switchout, and the electric bill keeps inching down. I have started unplugging to reduce phantom charge as well. I am also trying to edge the water down more by being more conservative when washing dishes.
We were recently reapproved for tribal commodities, so thats a huge savings grocery wise. It is based on how much I make, and I had a couple of low checks, so we now have them for 6 months! Now I have begun a weekly menu based on what we get, and have minimized our grocery store spending. They give us 7 whole chickens, 20 something pounds of beef, gobs of canned fruits, vegetables, dry goods, cheese. A true blessing.
I salvaged a bunch of 2x3 welded wire from a friends junk pile in order to reinforce my coop. Maybe in Feb or March I will get some chicks or young layers and begin that again. Also getting ready to begin our raised beds. We are going to try square foot gardening. My workplace was trashing a bunch of wooden bedframes that will now be converted into box gardens.
BTW, Christmas was great. Got a major score at Wallie World, * Star Wars T-shirts for my boy for $1 apiece!!! Also got the girls several outfits for less than 10-12 apiece. I got Laura all the Chappelle shows on DVD(used), that show is hilarious! She got me the 2nd Season of Rome(HBO series) on DVD . But best of all, we got my grandma a red afgan, and Laura made a beautiful iron on transfer of a pic of Mamaw with Papaw(hes been gone 20 years) surrounded by handpainted holly sprays. Made us all sniffle. Also hooked my aunt up with the complete Star Trek original series, on VHS that I picked up cheap at a garage sale.
All in all, it was a topsy turvey month. I hope all ya'll had a special and wonderful holiday. I have enjoyed all the recent journals and other posts. Everyone take it easy.
