Well, I have been remiss on my journal what with the holidays and all. To tell the truth, after my chicks got killed, I kind of didn't care about SS for a few weeks. Then Christmas hit(took the week of Christmas and then last week as vacation), so its been non stop with all the kids out of school, holiday plans, playing Griswald, etc.
So on the power front, just about finished with the CFL switchout, and the electric bill keeps inching down. I have started unplugging to reduce phantom charge as well. I am also trying to edge the water down more by being more conservative when washing dishes.
We were recently reapproved for tribal commodities, so thats a huge savings grocery wise. It is based on how much I make, and I had a couple of low checks, so we now have them for 6 months! Now I have begun a weekly menu based on what we get, and have minimized our grocery store spending. They give us 7 whole chickens, 20 something pounds of beef, gobs of canned fruits, vegetables, dry goods, cheese. A true blessing.
I salvaged a bunch of 2x3 welded wire from a friends junk pile in order to reinforce my coop. Maybe in Feb or March I will get some chicks or young layers and begin that again. Also getting ready to begin our raised beds. We are going to try square foot gardening. My workplace was trashing a bunch of wooden bedframes that will now be converted into box gardens.
BTW, Christmas was great. Got a major score at Wallie World, * Star Wars T-shirts for my boy for $1 apiece!!! Also got the girls several outfits for less than 10-12 apiece. I got Laura all the Chappelle shows on DVD(used), that show is hilarious! She got me the 2nd Season of Rome(HBO series) on DVD :). But best of all, we got my grandma a red afgan, and Laura made a beautiful iron on transfer of a pic of Mamaw with Papaw(hes been gone 20 years) surrounded by handpainted holly sprays. Made us all sniffle. Also hooked my aunt up with the complete Star Trek original series, on VHS that I picked up cheap at a garage sale.
All in all, it was a topsy turvey month. I hope all ya'll had a special and wonderful holiday. I have enjoyed all the recent journals and other posts. Everyone take it easy.

Sounds like Christmas was good at your house.

Those inches off the electric bill sure look good going back in the pocket book don't they?

Glad you are back.

I went to Orshelens today and found thier garden seeds on markdown!!! The kids and I will probably start some seeds in containers in the kitchen tomorrow. I picked up Mustard greens, Bib lettuce, Cabbage, Broccoli, Yellow Crook Necked Squash, Kentucky Wonder Pole Beans, Boston Pickling cukes, and Spinach. We will get started tomatoe plants and onion bulbs soon to go with every thing else. I'm so excited!!!
Also at O's were Red Sex Link Pullet chicks. I was going to wait a couple more weeks and buy some fixing to lay pullets to replace our murdered BO's I think I stood in the store for 30min's, thinking "Yes...No...Yes.. No". Finally Brokedown and bought 8, rationalizing that I would know the complete history of these birds as versus taking a chance on someone elses methods in the formative growth period. So now the aquarium brooder is back on top of the fridge lol. Also time to build the brood cage out of the fan shell I talked about earlier.
I'll post pics of the chicks in a bit, time to start supper. Hope everyone has had a great day.

Your talking about the garden seed reminds me that I need to start some now, too. Leeks, mostly. I bought the bundles of started leek plants last spring but they formed seed stalks in September which biennials aren't supposed to do the first year, so I'm going with seed.

My Red Sex Link pullets are little laying machines, lol!
So cool to read the excitement!

Hello, T! Don't know how I missed your journal but I did. So sorry about your BOs, they sure were pretty! Welcome to the site, BTW!

Hope you find our ideas of use and I hope we can glean some good ones from you as well! :) I've been contemplating the CFLs and I almost bought some the other day.

If you just buy one or two when you go to the dollar store its not so bad on the wallet. They really do reduce your electric usage. At Dollar General you can get a two pack for $7(2 65 watts that use 13 apiece). I have found a lot of great ideas on here, and hope to contribute some of my own.
