I think I put too many words in my post and wasn't clear. The shelves will be supported every 16" with 2x4's front and back. I attached the back supports first, and now I will frame it in with 2x4's all the way around, including the floor. Doing this without extra hands, I needed to have these supports to help with stabilization first.

When I install the front 2x4's, each one will have a block screwed to it to support the front of the shelf, which will also be screwed in.

To shut out light and dust, I am going to velcro a drape of black fabric from the top shelf that can be lifted up or removed to access the jars. I already have the fabric, left over from a project, but if I didn't, I think the plastic tablecloths would be a great choice.

I am thrilled with all the suggestions and support. Thank you !!!

Oh, I can't build a root cellar because of the cost and because of our city's multiple restrictions. Plus, I am going to end up using almost all of my backyard for gardening.

ETA: I have some moulding in the garage that I am going to apply to the edges of the shelves as a lip to keep the jars in place. Forgot to say that.

By the way rty, those are BEAUTIFUL pic of root cellars. You should start a thread about them. Some of the people (ok MOST) on this forum do have land to build one on. Others of us are just interested. smile
I am working on the herb topic, when I get that translated, remind me then ;)

How do you translate things rty? Do you do it manually?

My Geek son introduced me to Google translate. You just go to the website Google Translate Cut and past into it what needs translating. Ta DA!

rty007 in relation to food storage. Where I live in California many homes don't have a cellar. And to put one in, you need permits etc. which costs money. I know of people who have dug a cellar under their houses without permits, but it is always a risky thing to do.
The house I live in does not belong to me and does not have a cellar. This house is on about 1 acre.
When we built our chicken house we were worried that FIL would have something to say about it, fortunately he didn't. Probably because we did do a nice job. But we would need a permit to build anything bigger.

People out east are not familiar with the joys of bentonite in the soil...which is why I don't have a basement either :D

My electric drill quit. Right in the middle of a 2" screw, it just stopped. So, until I can find someone to look at it or borrow one from someone who will trust me with theirs after I broke mine, I am stuck.

I hate it when that kind of thing happens.
