I bought a vitamix about 6 years ago. They were doing a display of them at our local Costco. I thought it was the neatest thing since peanutbutter! And the fact that I could make peanutbutter in it was ultra cool! We got it and the extra gizmo with it for grinding grains. The rep told us all the great things it could do - including hashbrowns - that's what sold my husband.
So we bought it brought it home, made peanutbutter, smoothies, soup, powdered sugar. It was great! Then we tried making hashbrowns. It made mashbrowns. My hubby was so disappointed. It did seem alot of money to have spent to be disappointed. So we took it back. For about the same money I'd spent on it and the extra grain mill set - I was able to buy a Nutrimill and my Bosch Univeral Mixer on a combo special. I love both of those gadgets! I don't think I'd make bread if I didn't have my mixer - it takes all the hard work out of it. With 7 kids we go through alot of bread and I don't want to have to make it daily. I love, Love LOVE my tools. Sometimes I think it wouild be neat to have the fancy blender, but aside from being able to make a raw soup, my blender that came with my Bosch does a pretty good job. AND I've since bought a few attachments that fit on my Bosch that make it even more versatile - I have the slicer/shredder attacher and the juicer. I plan to get the flaker soon, then I'll be able to roll our own oats! Looking forward to that, we eat alot of oatmeal here.
Anyway.....getting a little off track. I just wanted to say that I thought I'd love my vitamix but it just wasn't all that I'd hoped it would be. If I were vegetarian or vegan or enjoyed lots of green drinks I could see it being a great tool for us - but it didn't serve our needs enough. And I can crack grains in my Bosch blender - it's just not worth my time with our large family size, so I don't ever do it.
