Well I halfway milked a goat today...I say halfway because I refused to myself, and refused to make her stand in a thunderstorm for the process. It was lightning :hide Anyway, for her first time, and 15 minutes, she only kicked me 18 times, so I think that went pretty well  It wasn't a huge problem catching, collaring, and leashing her to lead her to the stand. She saw the food and decided she'd eat it with her head in the stocks and back legs on the ground though and well that just didn't work for me. So, I picked her humongous butt up and put her up there right. I did not wash her udders this time, did not intend on keeping the milk, just wanted her to get a feel for the process, and will gradually get her to stay up, not kick, and stand for washing and milking. All in all it really did go pretty well. I do need to get some udder cream for her as it seems the babies have not been quite so gentle on her :/ I figure that is why she tried to kick so much. I'll get her healed up and used to being touched and have her calm in the stand in no time though. I think other than the discomfort from being a bit sore she rather enjoyed the attention. She hasn't been handled much either, and is still a bit high strung, so it was a learning whose the boss process all the way. I won  I think I will just milk her in the mornings and let her rest the afternoons. I know I won't get as much milk that way but it will be worth it to let her ease into the process with as little stress as possible. Tomorrow morning I will wash her and do it right. I want to see how good her milk tastes...without hair and dirt ;) The dogs approved of todays half cup or so :D And that is that.....

Question for goat folks that may see this...would it be a good thing to try to groom her, brush her, etc. while on the stand after milking while she finishes eating? I want her to enjoy being up there as much as possible and well she's dirty from all the bad weather anyway, and could use a good brushing the dirt out of her fur.

:thumbsup

It would absolutely be a good idea to give her some lovins and scratchins and groomins on the stand.

My first experience was a lot like yours. If she continues to be nasty you can always hobble her.

I started to hobble her anyway, but decided to give her a chance to play nice. I think she did really well considering she is a bit stressed anyway from me trading her baby boy off yesterday :hu I think she will eventually do very well....just not today
