I agree.... I have never heard of them before
<<goes off to google>>

So, you just have to replace the rubber sealing ring when it wears out? (I'm confused, but it really doesn't take much.) It doesn't look lik you can buy the rings separately.

On another note for the Canadians out there, Dollarama is selling canning lids Bernardin lids for a 12-pack for $1.25

I looked into those tattler reusable lids. The wide mouth sells for 19.95 for 2 dozen. That's 10 bucks a dozen. At those prices, it would take about 5-6 years to get to the break even point of regular lids @ 2 bucks a dozen........We already have well over 400 dozen of the steel lids for wide mouth jars, so it just wouldn't work for us to start the switch over to the reusable lids.
I prolly won't live long enough to use the ones I already have!! :gig :gig

With the tattler lids, you turn the rubber ring over each time you re-use it, and you can tell by the indentation made by the pressure of the lid against the rubber and the lip of the jar. You need to store the rubber rings in an airtight container to make them last longer, just like the ones on the old bail-type canning jars.

I haven't done inventory but I probably have about a hundred dozen lids which will last me less than two years, so switching over to Tattler will work for me. It will take me a few years to switch over, so I may or may not totally switch, but I do think it will be cost effective. I will be able to reuse the same Tattler lids several times within the year, as my canning style is more about convenience meals than storing all my produce, and I make 365 pints of catfood for the year, too.

I worry about availability, too. I've read that the rubber rings, if taken care of properly, can last for many years. I imagine one could stock up on those and vacuum seal them to keep them fresh longer.

I'd worry about the thin rubber on the metal rings with long-term storage, though, so be sure to rotate your stock. Maybe date your boxes as you buy them, at least with the year purchased.

We already stack them according to date of purchase, and we store them in a dark, very dry basement. So far even the bulk one we bought off of E-bay are still in great shape and working flawlessly. we just last evening (FINALLY!) finished canning the last of our garden tomato juice. I made spaghetti sauce and we got 24 pints!

something else to consider - the tattler lids are BPA-free, and the standard canning lids are not.

And you can buy the rubber rings separate.

I got my first 2 dozen for Christmas! Can't wait to try them :D
