Ooooh, neat! I don't think I have ever been "cool" before . I've made a big pot of pea soup for dinner, and always like a little Tabasco in that, so we'll see how it works. I have to be careful; things like hot sauce are only for me, and not at all for DH, so the sauce goes in my bowl, and not in the big pot.
FD, do you have any friends that might tend to buy apple juice, or wine, in jugs? I know most apple juice these days is in plastic, but the stuff in the health food stores/aisles is still in glass. The jugs are smaller, 3/4 gallon, but still ... I got one of these over Christmas to make mulled cider for a relative who doesn't drink wine. My vinegar is in it now.
And yes, doesn't it make you feel good to know you have made something so easily, when the storebought stuff is so expensive?

A friend came over today to take some kefir grains and have a tutorial on proper care and feeding of kefir. We also made a batch of sauerkraut together, since she was a bit intimidated by it all but wants to do better. I showed her kombucha and gave her some samples of the ways we drink it....she said, "This can't be good for you!" It was so delicious! And I let her try a fermented dill pickle vs the dills she is used to, made with white vinegar....she practically did a dance of joy in my kitchen!

It was quite fun! Dace, we gotta teach cooking classes....I want to do fermenting classes. Watching people's reactions when they suspiciously take a cautious bite, then go into paroxisms of gastromic ecstasy....too much!

paroxisms of gastromic ecstasy!!!!

Is this legal? Sounds like fun, anyway :D

Thanks so much for the pasta recipe. I have put it where this nutty laptop can't get rid of it again.

Cheap, fun, and behind closed doors! What more could one want?

So, how about a triumvirate of fermenting classes? Mass, SoCal, and OR? I'm game. (I wonder how many people in my little community would have any interest?)

Ok, but I am only coming to most of you during the summer :plbb
We can all gather at my place in the winter :bun

That is great about your friend! Nothing like a little hands on to scare away the intimidation and bring on the confidence!!
